Thad-SammonsThaddeus Edward Sammons, Jr., 88, of Taylors, husband of Racheal Lollis Sammons for 64 years, joyfully entered into his long-awaited heavenly home to be forever with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 29, 2012, following an extended illness. Mr. Sammons loved the Lord first and made it his life’s mission to win as many people to Christ as he could. He was very successful in this ministry, enthusiastically sharing the Gospel with family, friends, and strangers wherever he went. With his winsome personality and genuine compassion for people, he seldom ever missed an opportunity to be a witness. He was an ordained deacon and long-time member of Mountain Creek (Greenville) and Cresthill (Savannah) Baptist Churches and later a member of Pelham Road Alliance Church and currently, of Milford Baptist Church. He served in countless capacities in these churches, but missions were his passion. Mr. Sammons loved his family deeply, serving them as a faithful Godly example, and guiding them with wisdom and quiet strength. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: David Sammons, Sr. of Taylors, and Guy Sammons (Sandra) of Savannah, GA; and a daughter, Gena Mistretta (Pete), also of Taylors. Additionally, Mr. Sammons is survived by two sisters: Margaret Watson (Sam) of Warner Robbins, GA and Elizabeth Funk (Eldon) of New Albany, Indiana; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents: Thaddeus E. Sammons, Sr. and Helen Williams Sammons, and a dear brother, Charles W. Sammons. Mr. Sammons loved his Country, having proudly served in the Army Air Force in World War II and later in the Civil Service from which he retired in Savannah, GA where he and the family invested their lives in ministry, expanding their family and friendships for eighteen years before returning to their home in Taylors in 1981. Mr. Sammons was an avid reader, a Bible scholar, an honest and excellent mechanic, a pilot and an aviation enthusiast, a good story-teller and writer, a talented artist and creative crafter, a builder and a gardener. He had many interests and pursuits, enjoying life and liberty on his way to joy forever in the presence of Christ.

He was a patriot who cared deeply for his country and future generations of Americans. He kept abreast of national and international affairs. He was proud of his southern heritage and wrote several exactly articles for publication in The Times Examiner about his boyhood memories growing up in the rural south.

He painstakingly built an airplane in his garage but had the wisdom not to take it on its maiden flight at his advanced age.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Mountain Creek Baptist Church, 255 W. Mountain Creek Rd., Greenville, with Dr. Dusty Reynolds of Savannah, GA officiating. Visitation immediately preceded the funeral service at the church. Burial was at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery on site. The family would like to thank Meals on Wheels and Hospice of South Carolina for their special care and kindness. Online condolences may be made at www.thewoodmortuary.com.
