An earlier celebration took place on June 27, 2009, at the home of their daughter, Charlene Cox, of Taylors, South Carolina. This surprise party was given by their daughters and their eight grandchildren (Malaine and Andy Kantra and daughter Grace, of Newtown, Pennsylvania; Charlene and Jim Cox and their children, Caleb, Elise and Casey of Taylors, South Carolina; Dianne and Tim Dennis and their children, Sarah, Bethany, Alyssa and Brenna, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana). The festivities included a mock-wedding, performed by the grandchildren, and a musical performance by Caleb and Elise Cox, singing Unchained Melody, (the couple's favorite song from the 50's) accompanied by Sarah Dennis on piano.
