On Saturday, February 10, the Children of the Confederacy, Joseph Evan Davis Chapter #907, hosted its first “Moonlight and Roses” dance at the Harbor Town Clubhouse in Greenville.

Greetings were brought by various dignitaries, including Chaz Schwiers, President of the Joseph Evan Davis Chapter; William Baber, Children of the Confederacy 2nd Vice President General; Mrs. Martha Van Schaick, United Daughters of the Confederacy Vice President General; and Mr. Jim Forrester, Commander of Sons of the Confederacy Veterans Camp #36. Mrs. Beverly Sutton, the tireless and dedicated Director of the Joseph Evan Davis Chapter, welcomed everyone.

The Joseph Evan Davis Chapter #907 has been working to raise money for the Randolph Relief Fund, a benevolent fund used to assist “Real Daughters” of Confederate veterans who are still living. The four young people who raised the most money were crowned king, queen, prince and princess for the evening.

Guests enjoyed delicious catered hors d’oeuvres and desserts in between dancing. Period 1860s dance instruction was provided by Heather Sheen, with help from the Sheen family as demonstrators. Everyone had a chance to learn the Virginia Reel, Pat-A-Cake Polka and Carolina Promenade.

The Children of the Confederacy is an organization of young people from infancy through their eighteenth birthday who are descendants of men or women who honorably served the Confederate States of America in the Army, Navy or Civil capacity. The objectives of the organization are historical, benevolent, educational, patriotic and memorial. The Joseph Evan Davis Chapter is sponsored by the UDC Winnie Davis Chapter #442. If you are interested in joining, or know of a child who would like to join, please contact Mrs. Sutton at 864-370-2100 or 864-836-3819.
