Sergeant Adrian J. Lewis made the ultimate sacrifice for his country while serving a third tour of duty in Iraq with the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor, 3rd Infantry Division.
Sgt. Lewis was recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for valor, the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal and several other awards.
His life and service to his country were honored Saturday, April 7, 2007 by his family, friends and military unit. Funeral services were held at Valley Brook Outreach Baptist Church in Pelzer, South Carolina, with Pastor Curtis Johnson presiding and Rev. Kenneth Harrison, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church officiating.
Committal and Interment were conducted in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
A graduate of Southside High School, where he was known for his perpetual smile, Sgt. Lewis died in Ramadi, Iraq, during an intense firefight March 21st, 2007. He is survived by his wife Amanda Mims Lewis, a son Gabriel Lewis and daughters Gwendolyn Elexius, Sade’ Adrian Elaine and Brianna.
General Joseph Schroedel from Fort Gordon, Georgia, presented Amanda Lewis, the sergeant’s widow his Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart and she gently placed them on his flag draped casket.
Guest speakers during the memorial service included Mr. James Dixon, a family friend, brother-in-law Mr. Corey Mims, Eugene Harrison, Sgt. Lewis’s uncle, Ms. Nikedra Lewis, a cousin, and Bob Inglis, US House of Representatives, SC 4th District.
The Fort Gordon, Georgia Honor Guard served as Pall Bearers. An honorary escort represented Sgt. Lewis’s military unit, the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armored Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.
The Patriot Guard Riders provided escort for the funeral procession and General Joseph Schroedel presented the American Flag to Mrs. Amanda Lewis, a lasting symbol of the sacrifice of her husband, she refers to as “the man of my dreams, husband, lover, best friend, my strength, rock, heart and soul, and hero.”
