Black Woman Pentecostal Preacher Speaking in Tongues
With establishment Republicans seemingly trying to distance themselves from the so-called “Christian Right” that paved their road to the White House and control of both houses of Congress in recent decades, Democrats are attempting to capture the “religious” image.
The Democrat’s secret weapon comes in the form of the Rev. Leah Daughtry, a New Yorker and former chief of Staff for DNC Chairman Howard Dean.
Rev. Daughtry is a tongues talking black woman Pentecostal preacher and pastor of House of the Lord Pentecostal Church in Washington, DC.
The Rocky Mountain News reports that Rev. Daughtry is a “fifth-generation pastor who teaches Bible study and speaks in tongues – a mysterious language of praise or prophecy and also a way to reach potential converts.”
The mission Rev. Daughtry has been given by the Democrats is to “speak the language of religious voters.” She will attempt to appeal to the Christian evangelicals who have traditionally been part of the conservative base of the Republican Party and rejected Democratic candidates because of their support of abortion, gay marriage and a radical socialist agenda.
Americans will see and hear a lot from Rev. Daughtry over the next two years. Her greatest access to the media will come through her appointment as chairman of the national convention the Democrats will hold in Denver in August of 2008.
A spokesman for the Religion News Service describes Daughtry as one of the country’s “Dozen Most Effective Democrats on Faith and Religion.”
In a recent media interview, Daughtry acknowledged that Democrats are continuing to develop their message to “values voters.” She said the Democrat message to religious people will contain an appeal to social activism blended with the environ-ment and will be very compatible
with her liberal branch of Pentecostalism.
Democratic strategists believe that Republicans have been able to manipulate and use evangelical Christians as Democrats have generally controlled the congregations of many traditional black churches. They apparently intend to break the barrier by first attempting to appeal to charismatic church members who tend to be more integrated racially than churches of more traditional denominations.
Radical environmentalists and New Age promoters of Eastern Religions have infiltrated many evangelical congregations in recent years. DNC Chairman Howard Dean’s new strategy to capture the “religious” vote in 2008 will measure the effectiveness of that strategy.
