The capital campaign to establish a permanent home for Camp Spearhead, a program that has provided camping experiences for individuals with special needs and disabilities in the Upstate since 1968, officially launches on Thursday, June 14.
The Greenville County Recreation District will hold the kick-off at Pleasant Ridge Park, the camp’s new home, at 12 noon to an audience of former and present Spearhead campers and their families, special guests, and significant donors. Pleasant Ridge is located on Hwy. 11 one mile west of Hwy. 25 in Cleveland.
Campaign Director Mike Teachey said that $6 million of the $10 million capital goal has already been raised through the public and private sectors. Phase I plans call for housing, a lodge/dining facility, airnasium, pond, pool, and recreational facilities. Construction is set to begin in 2007.
The new facility will serve Camp Spearhead’s 8 week summer program and off-season weekend program. During free times it will be available for group rentals as a conference/ retreat center. Pleasant Ridge Park will remain open to the public year round. Spearhead will occupy 40 of the park’s 240 acres.
The decision to build at Pleasant Ridge was made when the site which the camp is currently using was sold. New owner Naturaland Trust has agreed to allow the camp to use this site until its new home is open. The Recreation District has assisted with operating Camp Spearhead since 1990. The District officially took over the camp from the Greenville County Disabilities and Special Needs Board in 2005.
