The Greenville County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse held what they called an emergency meeting Monday, November 12, and instructed the acting Phoenix Center Executive Director to disengage from the contract to purchase land for an Adolescent Treatment Center in the City of Travelers Rest near the North Greenville Hospital and proceed to close a deal on a parcel of some 20 acres located on Highway 25 bypass north of Furman University.
The property being offered is reportedly owned by Walter Brazier and is located near the intersection of Highway 25 bypass and Foothills Road adjacent to the WR Grace facility.
Councilwoman Lottie Gibson, liaison to the commission from Greenville County Council, said a public hearing would likely require a special called Council meeting. The property is available only until December 31, 2007, and the County Council does not have a regularly scheduled meeting in December.
The Commission and Phoenix Center ran into zoning problems with the property adjacent to the North Greenville Hospital. The cost for the property alone was set at $800,000. The Highway 25 property is described as a “very good deal” for the Center but a lot has to be accomplished before the end of the year for the purchase to be consummated.
The Times Examiner did not receive prior notice of the public meeting in accordance with the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act, and attempts to reach Commission Chairman Pat Toomey after the meeting adjourned were unsuccessful.
