Charles E. Shipman (left) of the Greenville County Alcohol and Drug Commission applauds land donation by T. Walt Brashier at a Phoenix Center board meeting Dec. 21.
Greenville County Businessman T. Walt Brashier has donated 20 acres of land near the Furman University Golf Course to the Phoenix Center for construction of an adolescent treatment facility to serve residents of Greenville County and the Upstate of South Carolina.

Brashier met with the interim executive director of the Phoenix Center and members of the Greenville County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, December 21st at the Phoenix Center to consummate the donation. The Phoenix Center is the largest provider of alcohol and drug treatment and prevention services in Greenville County.

The long awaited adolescent facility will fill a growing need for assistance in treatment of teens and families challenged by addiction, according to Mary K. Irby, interim executive director of the Phoenix Center.

The Center was given $6.2 million by the state for construction of an adolescent treatment center two years ago, but has been hampered by personnel changes and inability to locate affordable property suitable for the facility until recently when Brashier came forward with his offer.

The Phoenix center currently has residential treatment for women and limited space for men, but no residential space for treatment for adolescents.
