Requirement to File Individual Claims up to County Officials
The Greenville County Auditor, along with the Treasurer and Tax Collector will decide whether county property owners will be required to submit individual claims in order to obtain refunds of taxes collected illegally by the school district.
Some of the first claims were mailed to the County Auditor late last week by property owners. The Auditor will have a maximum of 30 days to decide, along with the Treasurer and Tax Collector, whether to acknowledge or deny the claim and whether the county will automatically refund the over-collections of property taxes by the Greenville County School District.
The Charleston Post and Courier reported Thursday, February 21st, that Charleston will send partial rebates to hundreds of property owners who left St. Andrews Public Service District and joined the city in recent years.
The County Auditor discovered recently that the School District of Greenville County overcharged property owners some $7 Million dollars in 2006. A decision as to how taxpayers will be reimbursed is pending.
More information may be made available during the Greenville County Taxpayers meeting, Thursday, February 28th at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown County Library.
