Dr. Phinnize (Penny) Fisher Monday was a good day for Dr. Phinnize (Penny) Fisher, Superintendent of Greenville County Schools. Fisher is clearly the most highly qualified Superintendent to head South Carolina’s largest school district serving some 68,000 students.
The school board acknowledged Fisher’s accomplishments Monday, in a special called meeting. She was given an excellent evaluation, a contract extension through June 2011, and awarded a 1.5 percent merit pay increase effective immediately.
The superintendent’s current salary is $206,974. The merit increase will boost her annual salary by $3,104.61 to $210,078.61.
Under the provisions of her contract, Dr. Fisher will also receive the same cost of living increase as given all district employees by the school board in the 2008-09 budget currently under preparation that goes into effect July 1, 2008.
Dr. Fisher joined the Greenville County School District in 1996 after serving as associate superintendent and principal in Montgomery County, Maryland schools. She served as assistant superintendent until the sudden unexplained departure of Dr. William Harner in May 2004.
Dr. Fisher received a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Paul’s College in Virginia, a master’s degree in education from Rutgers University, and a doctorate of education from Rutgers University. She also completed post-graduate studies at UCLA and the University of Utah.
Dr. Fisher is married to the Director of Public Safety in Spartanburg and they have two sons.
“The Board of Trustees commends Dr. Fisher for her excellent leadership as the superintendent of Greenville County Schools,” said Dr. Keith Ray, board chairman.
“The evaluation process gave Board members the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our school system under Dr. Fisher’s leadership. We are especially pleased to see improvements in academic achievement across all student classifications and look forward to working with Dr Fisher to continue to improve our education program,” Dr. Ray concluded.
