Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis reads citation awarding K-9 Unit member “Kroc” the Medal of Valor. “Kroc” is shown, at left, with handler Deputy Sheriff Tim Fuller. On March 20, 2008, Deputy Tim Fuller and “Kroc” responded to 201 Carver Road in Taylors to assist deputies in the apprehension of Jerry Dean Davis. Davis was wanted on several outstanding warrants and had been involved in the theft of a handgun several days before.
When deputies located Davis, he doused himself with gasoline and was armed with a knife. Davis refused all requests to surrender and all less than lethal attempts to subdue him failed. When Davis began to flee on foot, Deputy Fuller released “Kroc” to assist in the capture. As “Kroc” caught up to Davis and began to pull him to the ground, Davis stabbed “Kroc” with the knife, causing life threatening injuries. “Kroc” continued to try and bring Davis down even though he was seriously injured. It was only when Deputy Fuller called “Kroc” off that he stopped trying to subdue Davis. The actions of “Kroc” prevented injury or possible death to the deputies on the scene. “Kroc” was commended for actions that go above and beyond the call of duty by Sheriff Steve Loftis and presented the Medal of Valor at a special awards ceremony.
“Kroc” was in critical condition when he arrived at Upstate Veterinary Specialists for emergency surgery. He made a remarkable recovery from his wounds. Sheriff Loftis said “It is too early to say if or when the German Shepherd Hero will return to duty.”
