Representative Government Gone Awry PDF Print E-mail

I remember the days when most people trusted and even admired government officials and courts were expected to administer justice fairly to all who appeared before them. Those days are becoming a nostalgic memory as courts have become lawmakers and too many elected lawmakers have betrayed their constituents and bowed to the highest bidder.

For years things have been gradually changing for the worse. The change has been so gradual that most Americans apparently have not noticed that we are losing the freedom that our forefathers sacrificed, struggled and some died for.

The worst elements of the pro-communist anti-American rioters of the 1960’s who were not punished for their mischief that almost destroyed the republic are now running the country and dismantling our constitutional republic in favor of an ill-conceived  socialist dictatorship.

A bill currently before Congress, H. R. 2421, if passed and signed into law, will give the federal government total control over all sources of production. If passed into law, it will instantly convert the republic into a socialist third world country. The bill will give the federal government control over all water in the United States, and thereby control over all lands that empty the rain that falls on the private property into the federally controlled waters.

The control and regulation of water has already stripped property rights from people in every state. The 1973 endangered species act gave the federal government power to declare private property under the jurisdiction of the federal government. Court orders put privately owned “wetlands” under the jurisdiction of the federal government. Beginning in the 1990’s the fad of “comprehensive planning” that is now plaguing Greenville County became a seemingly justifiable way for government to control the use of private property.

Now we have a liberal Congress controlled by socialists who want to control the use of water and all activities affecting water.

The enemies of freedom and private property rights have successfully disguised their real intentions and taken over many local governments. The abominable Greenville County Tree Ordinance, passed under the influence of false information, is already stalling development in the rural areas of the county. The Beyond Recovery project to construct a residential training facility for those struggling with addiction to alcohol and other drugs is “in a holding pattern” waiting for “the tree count to be added to the civil engineering report.”

“Bottom land” is the most productive soil in this region for producing crops, yet the Greenville County Tree Ordinance prohibits activity of any kind in large portions of fertile bottom land.

Jim Burns, a member of Greenville County Council, is currently pushing a left-leaning Council toward more socialism. Burns proposes requiring a traffic study before anyone can open a road or driveway into a state or county road. If the cost is passed on to the property owner as suggested, it will effectively stop private development of property for residential or other use.

South Carolinians were up in arms when members of Congress tried to pass a bill giving amnesty to illegal aliens already in this country. Now members of the South Carolina Legislature, aligned with the Chamber of Commerce, in the face of strong urging from constituents, are blocking meaningful legislation to protect small business owners and taxpayers in general from the ongoing invasion by illegal aliens.

Will we remain a free republic through the next election cycle? It appears unlikely, unless some more sensible people wake up and get involved in activities in the public square. Remember, all that is needed for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.
