Hundreds Attend Fund Raiser
Major General Jim Livingston, USMC Ret., was the main speaker at the SC Wounded Warrior Project dinner Thursday at Taylors First Baptist Church.
As a captain serving in the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade in Vietnam, Capt. Livingston was wounded three times and, while disregarding heavy enemy fire, led his men in the destruction of over 100 mutually supporting bunkers and halted the enemy’s counter-attack. Although unable to walk due to severe wounds, he supervised the evacuation of casualties and only after being assured of the safety of his men, did he allow himself to be evacuated.
Gen. Livingston assured his audience that members of the armed forces fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan today are as patriotic, brave and committed to their mission as patriots who served our nation in past wars.
He concluded that those who risk their lives on the battlefield for their country have earned and deserve the respect and support of a grateful nation when they return.
Gen. Livingston also spoke of the importance and sacrifices of families back home.
The Wounded Warrior organizing committee was chaired by Mona Simmons. Committee members included Dr. and Mrs. Barry Blackston, Nadine Chasteen, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Holt, Paul Howell, Cathy Powell and Jill Smith.
Carol Goldsmith, WYFF – TV News Anchor, welcomed attendees and introduced speakers. Southside High School Air Force JROTC posted and retired the colors. Sgt. Robbie Blikle, Wounded Warrior, led in the Pledge of Allegiance; Nadine Chasteen sang the National Anthem and Dr. Frank Page, Pastor of Taylors First Baptist Church and President of the Southern Baptist Convention, led the Invocation.
In addition to the address by Gen. Livingston, Dr. Robert Richards, M. D., discussed brain injuries and the psychological scars experienced by some Wounded Warriors.
