Snow Campaign Chapter, USDAR, of Fountain Inn, SC, held its first meeting of the 2014-15 year at the Fountain Inn History Center, 102 Depot Street, Fountain Inn, SC, on Thursday, September 11, 2014. This year, Constitution Day is celebrated on Wednesday, September 17, commemorating the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787, by thirty-nine men in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The tradition of celebrating Constitution Week was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).  In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week.

The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915, on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  Constitution Week is now commemorated every year from September 17-23. Our guest speaker for the meeting was Polly Hellams, lifelong resident of Fountain Inn and Past Regent of Sullivan Dunklin Chapter DAR. In honor of Constitution Week, Mrs. Hellams presented a program on the Signers of the U. S. Constitution from the state of South Carolina: Pierce Butler, Charles Pinckney, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, and John Rutledge.  Reminding us that this year marks the 200th anniversary of The Star Spangled Banner, she ended her presentation by singing the last verse:

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved home and the war's desolation!

Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

In remembrance of the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attack on our country on September 11, 2001, on this year’s observance of Patriot Day, the chapter remembered those who gave their lives and the brave ones who risked their lives in rescue attempts on that sad day. The next chapter meeting will be the Chapter Birthday Luncheon on Thursday, October 9, 2014, at the Elegant Gourmet Restaurant in Simpsonville.  Ladies with a love of historic preservation, education and patriotism, who have ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War or who provided support for the Patriots, are encouraged to attend our meetings and join the DAR.
