Arizona Senator John McCain has been trying to convince Republican and independent voters that his experience in foreign policy makes him the best qualified candidate for President of the United States. Indeed, following the news of the Bhutto assassination, he did seem to be a little more knowledgeable on Pakistan than several other candidates.

Last Friday (January 11), the Department of Homeland Security finally handed down its long-anticipated final rules for the national ID card mandated by the REAL ID Act of 2005. The REAL ID Act was smuggled into the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror and Tsunami Relief Act of 2005 as its Division B. REAL ID had been unable to make it out of committee on its own merits. What is interesting is that nothing in the original REAL ID Act absolutely mandates compliance by the states.

In his book, Earth in the Balance, Al Gore warned that a “wrenching transformation” must take place to lead America away from the “horrors of the Industrial Revolution.” The process to do that is called Sustainable Development and its’ roots can be traced back to a UN policy document called Agenda 21, adopted at the UN’s Earth Summit in 1992.

Winning the Iowa Republican Caucus put former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee under a microscope. Generally speaking, Democrats are pleased with his win and many Republicans are troubled. Why are Democrats pleased that an articulate, likeable former Baptist preacher and two-term Governor of a state could become the Republican nominee for President of the United States?

Writing for a weekly has its hazards—especially when events start to happen very rapidly, as they do with presidential primaries. Your article might be dated before it has time to appear. The Iowa caucus was last week; by the time this reaches print, we will (presumably) have New Hampshire’s results. In the former, Ron Paul’s 10 percent was better than any official pundit expected.

This fanciful piece of artwork celebrating the birth of President William McKinley and the founding of his hometown of Niles, Ohio, is on display at the William McKinley Memorial. (This is the sixth article in a series of articles detailing the writer’s recent trip into the byways of yesteryear.)
In the last installment of my travelogue I told you about my visit to “Europe” in Ohio, as well as the “Steelworker” statue that I just happened to drive past on the way to my intended destination, the birthplace of William McKinley, our 25th president.

Government Cannot Do Church's Job |

One thing that Christians should come to terms with is the truism that government cannot do the church's job. Not in any shape, manner, or form. Yet, by the way many Christians and pastors behave these days, one gets the impression that they don't really understand this truth. Instead, it seems that many Christians and ministers see the government--especially the federal government--as an extension of the church.

If you're like I am, you've heard scores of media reports about the 2006 Duke University rape case, in which three white lacrosse players were falsely accused of raping a black stripper at a wild party at the home of one of the team members. These guys, convicted by the news media and Duke faculty, were later found innocent. It turned out that Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong was running for re-election. In seeking the black vote, he concealed DNA evidence that would have exonerated the lacrosse players.

Tim Russert is an excellent host of NBC’s Meet the Press. He is an aggressive interviewer who usually shows a good grasp of the critical issues he discusses. Still, when he interviewed Ron Paul last week, his intent seemed to be only to belittle the man who has raised more money from grassroots supporters than any other candidate in this wide-open presidential election. Instead of clearing the air, he mucked it up in many of the areas in which Ron Paul stands out as the true representative of freedom.

The Eve of 2008 – Where Do We Stand? |

The new year—2008—is at hand.
For some time I’ve viewed the approach of 2008 with a certain trepidation. I see three possibilities. Two thousand and eight could be a nightmare year—with the dollar collapsing, the economy tanking, more jobs for Americans gone, more efforts at amnesty for illegal aliens, and doubtless more police-statism on the horizon. Will 2008 see a “catastrophic emergency?”

Many Christian Americans are retreating from the political sphere, citing spiritual reasons, willfully forfeiting the liberties protected by earlier Christians.
For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required. — Luke 12:48
As a minister, 1 know from personal experience that many of our Christian brethren do not view the preservation of our great country and God-given liberties as some-thing they should be involved with. Their attitude seems to be that God will take care of it or that we are in the end times and so any involvement on our part would not make any difference anyway and in fact could conflict with God’s will.

Do you know the story of the Incredible Disappearing Border Fence? It's an object lesson in gesture politics and homeland insecurity. It's a tale of hollow rhetoric, meaningless legislation and bipartisan betrayal. And in the run-up to the Iowa caucuses, it's a helpful learning tool as you assess the promises of immigration enforcement converts now running for president.
