Committee Members Allegedly Violated Meeting Attendance Rules

Following lengthy, and sometimes emotional  debate and several preliminary votes, the Greenville County Republican Party Executive Committee voted to remove fourteen of their members from the position they were elected to by their precinct organization.

The charge was that the committeemen failed to attend three or more meetings in violation of Party rules that prescribe removal if three meetings are missed by an Executive Committeeman who is the voting member representing the precinct organization.

The committee voted to delete two men from the expulsion list who were present and presented compelling justification for their actions. Most of those affected were not present.

The expulsion action was a total surprise to most committee members. Chairman Chad Groover said letters had been mailed to all of the Executive Committeemen who were in violation of the attendance rules. Committeeman Don Rogers, whose name was deleted from the expulsion list by a vote of his contemporaries said he never received a letter.

First Vice Chairman Nate Leupp said he had a list of people who wanted to serve as executive Committeemen. The comment caused Committeeman Dean Allen to remind the committee that the precinct president should move into the vacancy without interference from  party officials.

Members of the Executive Committee were in agreement that rules must be enforced. Several of those removed were relatively new in their positions and may not have been familiar with the rules.

Several Committeemen privately expressed the view that, in the interest of party unity, a less hasty  approach would have been preferable in order to avoid fueling speculation that sinister motives are involved in replacing voting members following a close and hard fought election of officers last year.
