It has been a great honor and pleasure to be a Charter Member of the Major Rudolf Anderson, Jr. American Legion Post 214. The Times Examiner was honored to be recognized by the Adjutant of Post 214 for contributing to the growth and well-being of the Post through publicity in the newspaper for the Grand Opening ceremonies on Saturday, 14 October 2017.

The rise of Taylors Post 214 in just two years has been remarkable and nears the miraculous.

The new Taylors Post sprang from a nucleus of transfers from Post 3 in Greenville. Soon it had grown to 100 members and now more than 160 members. The newly formed Legion Post was committed to serve veterans and operate a military history museum for the local community. A permanent home for Rudolph Anderson Jr. Post 214 and the Cecil D. Buchanan Museum of Military History was dedicated last Saturday. It is prominently located in the Gallery Centre in Taylors on Wade Hampton Boulevard, between the Texas Roadhouse and Houser Shoes.

The Keynote Speaker for the Grand Opening was President of Bob Jones University, Steve Pettit. Steve Pettit is a graduate of the Citadel and BJU. He is a Christian Patriot in the true sense. He is making some interesting changes in Bob Jones University. He announced that BJU would probably be adding both an Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program within the next two years. He has been working toward that goal since arriving at the university.

A highlight of the Grand Opening program was a performance by the Spartanburg County Police Drill Team under the command of Major Allan Freeman.

Their precision drill performance had a dramatic Christian and patriotic theme.

Former South Carolina State Senator Lewis Vaughn, a candidate for President of the national Korean War Veterans association was one of the featured guests for the occasion. Vaughn is also raising funds to build a national monument for Korean War service members.

The Army National Guard Band played the National Anthem, accompanied by JROTC Color Guards from J.L. Mann, Mauldin, Southside, and Carolina High Schools.

Both the current and past South Carolina American Department Commanders honored the Post with their participation.

Festivities were concluded with a ribbon cutting and invitation to enjoy refreshments and tour the Post and museum.
