Ground was broken Wednesday, July 1st by the Greenville County Recreation District for the Otter Creek Water Park at Northside Park on Darby Road off State Park Road in northern Greenville County. The $3 million family water park is one of 17 projects made possible by a Hospitality Tax instituted by Greenville County Council in April of 2007. The park is scheduled to open in the summer of 2010.

Otter Creek will compliment the Recreation District’s existing Discovery Island Water Park at Southside Park near Simpson-ville and features three large slides, spray pad, kiddy slide, zero depth area, leisure pool and concessions.

The water park replaces the 37 year old Northside Park swimming pool, explained Facilities Director Ray Dunham. The pool was in need of significant repairs and upgrades and only served about 7,500 visitors per season. The former pool at Southside Park served 7,000 per year. Today, Discover Island welcomes over 100,000 each summer.

“We fully expect Otter Creek to do the same,” Dunham said. “Water parks are family friendly, able to accommodate larger populations, and a national trend.

Otter Park will join the list of swimming facilities owned by the District including Westside Aquatic Center, the Lakeside Park pool, Discovery Island, and the Pleasant Ridge Park Lake.
