Is Governor Haley REALLY Against Common Core Standards?
- By Johnnelle Raines - Upstate Regional Leader SCPIE
Last night I watched intently Governor Haley’s State of the State address…no mention of getting rid of Common Core Standards (CCS)! When asked recently at events she clearly will state she is against our present Common Core Standards. But no mention of that in her Education Plan or her State of the State address?
I am a huge fan of country singer Toby Keith. His song, “A Little Less Talk And A Lot More Action” comes to mind when I hear Governor Haley “say” she is against CCS. Last night would have been the perfect opportunity to make sure all the Legislators and citizens of SC know she is against these standards…but what did we hear from her on these child abusive standards? ... crickets…

Tax the Rich and Raise the Minimum Wage
- By Frank Hall - Greenville, SC
As I write this, several politicians are advocating that we raise the tax rate on the rich, so our government will have more money to pay our debts, and they want to raise the minimum wage to “help” the poorest of the poor. Several other politicians and many private citizens, including me, strongly believe both of these measures would be tragic mistakes. They ignore and run counter to the realities of street level economics. Let us look at a ridiculously simple hypothetical case to see what I am talking about:
Mr. John Doe owns a factory employing 200 workers that manufacture Supergismos at the rate of 1,000,000 per year which he sells for $10 each, generating a gross income of $10,000,000. His total production costs run $9 per unit. His net profit before taxes is $1,000,000. His present tax rate is 90%, so the government takes $900,000 and he gets to keep $100,000 per year, which he regards as a somewhat disappointing, barely adequate income for someone who works so hard and risks so much as he does.

The Debate on Common Core
- By Johnnelle Raines - Regional Upstate Leader of SC Parents Involved in Education
First of all I want to congratulate The Times Examiner and WORD radio for recognizing what is truly important news to cover. They were the only newspaper and radio show I am aware of that was in attendance at the Debate on Common Core held at Greer High School this past week sponsored by SC Senators Tom Corbin, Representatives Mike Burns and Dwight Loftis.
SC Parents Involved in Education’s President Sheri Few, American Principal Project’s Jane Robbins, and Americans Have Had Enough’s Executive Director Roan Garcia Quintana decimated the representatives from SC Education Association’s representatives in this debate. They made it clear Common Core is NOT in the best interest of SC children. All the local TV stations, radios, and newspapers were sent a press release...but obviously they didn't think the future of SC children's education was important enough to cover. Shame on them!

Common Core Standards Were NOT Properly Vetted
- By Johnnelle Raines - Pickens, SC
I am a citizen of South Carolina and I am concerned about children's education. I have taken the time to read all the Common Core Standards grades K through 12 as well as research the problems associated with these standards. The problems are multiple in number and grave in level of concern.
Common Core Standards were NOT properly vetted. There is NO research to support their effectiveness. They have NOT been field tested. Bottom line is SC children are guinea pigs and our 2010 State Board of Education, Education Oversight Committee, Former Superintendent Jim Rex and Governor Mark Sanford have pimped SC children out to the highest bidder...Bill Gates. Bill Gates has spent close to 150 MILLION dollars to promote these standards. Why, you may ask, did our education decision makers sell our students out? The answer pure and simple...to get Federal Race to the Top money and a No Child Left Behind waiver. Their decision was NOT based on factual information these standards were better than our previous standards.

Reaction to Tony Beam’s Message
- By Juliette Kozak
The Blessing of Abraham Gen.3:12 is Salvation in Christ. And if ye be in Christ, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Gal. 3:29
Tony, It was an encouragement to me to know that a pastor would be on the radio on Christmas eve to speak of the truths of the Word of God on our Savior’s birth.
I am constrained to give you my reaction to what you brought to us in your message on the account of our Savior’s birth.

We Are Headed for Self-Destruction
- By Carol A. Hatcher - Watkinsville, GA
With our country apparently being headed toward self-destruction, we wish to thank you for The Times Examiner which brings truth to others in these very stressful times.
Enclosed is a book, ABANDONMENT THEOLOGY by John Chalfant, that offers excellent insight into key elements that made America great; where some of the current problems were birthed; and offers ideas to help prevent further decline.
Sometimes one probably wonders, “Is God punishing our nation?”

“Amnesty By Any Other Name Is Still Amnesty!”
- By Allan E. Brown - Greenville, SC
After 26 years as a police officer for the city of Greenville, I retired to take a job as a Court Security Officer under authority of the U.S. Marshals Service—my primary responsibility being protection of federal judges, among other duties. In this capacity that I occasionally have the privilege of seeing lawful immigrants come to the Clement Haynesworth Federal Building to complete the final step on their “pathway to citizenship” in compliance with our immigration laws.
