Education leader brings track record of charter school success

Legacy Charter School announced the hiring of veteran Greenville educator Fred Crawford as executive director of the school’s Elementary Campus and Parker Campus.

Crawford comes from Greenville Technical Charter High School, where he served as principal for 10 years. Greenville Tech Charter was the first charter school in South Carolina to be named a National Blue Ribbon School and in 2007 was honored as a National Charter School of the Year by the Center for Education Reform.

“Fred Crawford has a track record of preparing students to succeed in college and in life, and that is our passion at Legacy Charter School,” said William Brown, Legacy Charter School board chairman. “We are constantly seeking to provide our students with the best leadership and instruction we can find, and there is no more successful education leader in Greenville County than Fred.”

Crawford has spent more than 25 years as a teacher, coach and administrator. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of South Carolina. Crawford is active in education leadership and reform efforts at both the state and national levels, including the Coalition of Essential Schools, Annenberg Principals Institute at Brown University and the Principals’ Center at Harvard University.

“I am excited to share Legacy Charter School’s vision of empowering underserved urban students to become college graduates and productive, fit, principled citizens,” Crawford said. “At Greenville Tech Charter, we routinely placed 100 percent of our graduates into college, with many students earning college credits while still in high school. With the added ability to work with students beginning in K5 at Legacy Charter School, I see no reason why we can’t replicate those results.”
