Washington Center’s Adaptive Environmental Science teacher, Jamie Taber was awarded the Champion of the Environment major grant winner, receiving $2,400 for establishing the school’s Sustainable Seagulls project. The project focuses on teaching students to reduce waste through upcycling, turning “trash into treasure,” to help reduce the carbon footprint. Through the grant an online and in-house store, Seagull Sustainability Shop in which plants and edible greens are raised and sold to help raise funds for the school. Art teacher, Amanda Wakely also contributes to the project by helping students to turn recycled items into handmade crafts. A commercial will soon be aired in Columbia, SC featuring this project!
