BJU - First Place Team Mercer

A Bob Jones University Bruins intercollegiate computer programming team placed first in the small school division at the annual Spring Programming Competition held Saturday, Feb. 16, at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.

BJU entered three teams in the 28 team competition. One BJU team—Nathan Collins, Samuel Henry and Jacob Brazeal—placed first in the small school division. The team of Zac Hayes, Ryan Longacre and Jeremiah England finished second. The rookie team—Steven Platt, Erick Ross, Colton Shipe—placed first in their division.

The five hour long competition has been hosted by Mercer University for 14 years. Formatted after the ACM Regionals competition, teams consist of three individuals that compete in four divisions. Scoring is based on the number of problems answered correctly.

“The Mercer contest allows us to benchmark our students against the best schools in the southeast, while also being ranked against schools that are comparable in size,” said Dr. Jim Knisely, head of BJU’s Department of Computer Science. “It has been a joy to train this group and the seniors have had a great four years representing BJU.”

In addition to BJU, Clemson University, Georgia Tech, Mercer University, Lander University, the University of Alabama, Georgia College, Spelman College, The Citadel and the University of Central Florida participated in the competition.

The BJU team members include senior Nathan Collins of Taylors, South Carolina; senior Sam Henry of McDonough, Georgia; junior Zachary Hayes of Grovetown, Georgia; junior Ryan Longacre of Hallstead, Pennsylvania; junior Jeremiah England of Anchorage, Alaska; sophomore Steven Platt of Carmel, Indiana; senior Jacob Brazeal of Taylors, South Carolina; and freshman Erick Ross of Greenville, South Carolina.

BJU and the University of Central Florida both had two teams in the top-five overall along with one team from Georgia Tech. This year marks the fourth straight year BJU finished first in the small school division and the third time in four years that BJU's best team finished third overall.
