John-WeaverDo you lament the revisionist history being foisted on kids today, especially the mythology that passes for southern history?  A camp with a purpose, the annual Sam Davis Youth Camp, provides an opportunity for young people to learn the truth.

For five days youth are treated to some topnotch presentations regarding various aspects of southern history. Young people from age 12 to 19 are eligible to attend. Children who are younger may attend with a parent. Campers have a very full day beginning with the first presentation at 9:00. The day usually ends with a campfire at 10:00.

Ray-speakingSam Davis Youth Camp Southeast was held this year on the beautiful grounds of Camp Kinard outside of Batesburg-Leesville with 70 young people attending. Eight states were represented among the attendees, with campers coming from as far away as Missouri, Florida, and Virginia.

Some of this year’s topics that were presented to the young people are: Leadership, Southern Values, The Burning of Columbia, Confederate Air Force, Causes of the War Between the States (WBTS), Religion North and South, WBTS Medicine, Shipwrecks, WBTS Music, etc., and even an Oratory Contest is included. Saturday evening culminates in a traditional 1860s dance that features dances of the era. Dressy attire is encouraged for the dance, but not mandatory.

Trip-WilsonThe background of the speakers is impressive. This year’s speakers included historians, musicians, pastors, authors, attorneys, business owners and the like. During the presentations, the young people are expected to conduct themselves in a polite, attentive manner. Parents and other chaperones are very involved in coaching their campers regarding their deportment. Southern manners are valued and imparted during the week as well. The young people are all issued notebooks in which to take notes all week. A certificate of completion is awarded to each young person at the end of the week.

Yes, there is plenty of free time for fun. As expected at a camp, all sorts of outdoor activities are offered. The camp has a large, inviting swimming pool. Fishing and boating are also available. This year archery was taught and there was even an opportunity to watch a cannon being fired.

Jack-MarlarFood? The cook is privately contracted so that no one is subjected to the infamous ‘camp food’ that camps seem to be known for. Parents are encouraged to attend as chaperones. Also, families can attend the camp together. And in case of emergencies, a nurse is on site at all times.

This year the cost to attend was $495 per person. This price includes all meals and lodging. Full and partial scholarships are often available to those in need of assistance.

Consider investing in the future by sending your children or even someone else’s children to a camp committed to imparting historical truth and southern culture to the next generation.
