Governor Nikki Haley named Rep. Tim Scott of Charleston to replace Sen. Jim DeMint as South  Carolina’s Junior Senator.

Tim Scott has experienced the American dream. He is a self-made man, who listened to the advice of mentors and worked diligently. He was taught moral and ethical standards as a child in his home and church, and studied hard in school while working part-time jobs. He started and operated his own successful business, served on the Charleston County Council for a dozen years and was elected chairman four times.

Scott represented his district in the South Carolina House of Representatives, where he had the reputation of being one of the most conservative members. He  defeated candidates representing  some of the most respected political families in South Carolina in his first congressional primary race  and was recently elected to a second term in the United States House of Representatives.

Reportedly, DeMint had favored Scott as his replacement after he quits the Senate next month to take the helm of The Heritage Foundation.

Scott has not forgotten his roots nor those who helped him along the way. At age 47 he revealed his modesty in a brief speech before the State Republican Convention earlier this year.

“As a poor kid growing up in a single-parent household in North Charleston, South Carolina, I felt like I didn’t have much going for me. I did have a mom who believed in tough love, and a small business owner, who was my mentor, who taught me I could think my way out of poverty.”

Scott has been consistent in his opposition to “big government” and especially the oppressive Obamacare legislation.

“We cannot allow the federal government to control one-

sixth of the U. S. economy. Even more importantly, we cannot allow government bureaucrats to make health care decisions that should be made by doctors and patients,” Scott said.
