The Green New Deal (H. Res. 109/S. Res. 59, “GND”) has been the talk-of-the-town this week. The plan, sponsored by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-MA), is an extreme liberal’s utopia. Some Democrats including Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Elizabeth Warren (D-OK) immediately voiced their support for the plan, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) shied away from fully embracing it. This is the perfect time to highlight how absurd and dangerous the far-left can be.

Green New DealOcasio-Cortez has created a socialist blueprint for the next ten years. The plan includes language that promises free money even though it comes at a cost to American taxpayers. The government will give every American a college education, a job, and a house.  However, if someone is “unwilling to work” the government will still provide economic security for them.  Future generations would lose the values of commitment, investment, and personal choice. Instead, the federal government would make every choice for them, whether they wanted that or not.

After all of the feel-good provisions, this plan begins banning and eliminating some of our basic necessities. The GND calls for the elimination of all fossil fuel energy, nuclear energy, combustion-engine vehicles (which includes 99 percent of cars), and air travel. The plan encourages trains to be the preferred method of travel, however, this is not feasible for those who travel from Hawaii or Alaska. Just this week, California Governor Gavin Newsome cancelled his plans for a high-speed rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles because of the $77 billion price tag and the amount of time it would take to complete.  Building high-speed rails across the United States would only drive the nation further into debt without any guarantee of a final product.  In addition, the amount of short-term jobs created by new construction of railways would never balance the amount of jobs lost by eliminating these other methods.

Senate Leader Mitch McConnel (R-KY) has agreed to bring this plan to the floor.  While this may seem shocking, it is actually a wise political demonstration. Each Senate member will be on record voting for or against this ridiculous legislation. With the upcoming 2020 elections, a vote for this plan could end someone’s political career, especially in the more rural and industrial areas. Then, once the measure fails, it will delegitimize all other introduced deals.

Before the vote occurs, Eagle Forum will give you a chance to voice your opinion to your Senator. Afterward, we will tell you how they voted.
