Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jeff Duncan (SC-03) released the following statement after opposing H.R. 1, the so-called “For the People Act.”
“Do not be fooled by the title of H.R. 1 which passed the House of Representatives today. The “For the People Act” would be more appropriately named “For the Democrats Act.” This bill is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and an attempted power grab by House Democrats to centralize power in one place – Washington – and as far away from the people’s hands as possible. This bill imposes dangerous limits on free speech, provides government subsidies for campaigns, implements unconstitutional mandates, and weaponizes the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against conservatives.
“Our founders envisioned a weak and limited federal government, and they had a desire to reserve most of the power with states and, ultimately, the people. H.R. 1 is a blatant encroachment on the liberties and freedoms of the American people enshrined in our Constitution, but sadly it falls in line with the new socialist agenda of the Democrat majority.”
