There is a viral clip of an SC High School senior addressing her local School Board making the rounds on the internet. In it, a young woman steps to the microphone and publicly denounces her "conservative, Republican, Christian" father. She characterizes his deeply held convictions as "one-sided bigoted beliefs" and derides the “detrimental effect he has had on [her] life.”
The young lady admits she was "inspired” to speak out by her english teachers and that she couldn't have come to these conclusions without her teachers' support.
This heartbreaking clip will become all too common if establishment “Republicans” and Democrats get their way today and pass House Bill 4700 as is.
Snuck into an online safety bill during a committee hearing, H 4700 now contains language to establish an Orwellian "Ministry of Truth" to combat "distribution of disinformation and misinformation on social media."
Sound familiar? It should. In April 2022 the failed Biden Administration established the "Disinformation Governance Board" to "combat misinformation, malinformation, and disinformation vital to national security." You know, all those complete fabrications about Hunter Biden's laptop, the COVID lableak theory, and COVID vaccines providing immunity.
Of course, we knew all those stories labeled as misinformation were true. And in fact, the consensus today, even among the government, is that Hunter Biden's laptop is real. COVID did leak from a lab. And COVID vaccines don't prevent contracting or spreading the virus.
Thankfully, Biden's "Disinformation Governance Board" was dissolved less than 4 months after its formation due to backlash from conservatives and free speech advocates.
But leave it to SC Republicans to want to duplicate this massive failure in our own backyard. You must ask yourself, why does a Republican Supermajority continually push recycled left-wing policies?
So how exactly will South Carolina's "Ministry of Truth" work? The newly added section to H 4700 directs the Department of Education to develop programs aimed at telling your children what disinformation and misinformation is. The bill instructs the Department to take into consideration "educational materials on this topic developed by other states" like California and New York.
The fact is, partisan politics should be left out of the classroom, and parents should be able to trust that they are not being undermined by our schools. The last thing we need in SC is a far Left, government sanctioned arbiter of "truth" telling your children that your beliefs and news sources are misinformation.
SC Freedom Caucus members Adam Morgan and Ashley Trantham killed a standalone "media literacy" bill last session in the House Education Committee. But this time "Republicans" on the Judiciary Committee joined with Democrats to try and sneak this program into another bill intended to protect our children while online.
Freedom Caucus members have already filed amendments to remove Speaker Smith's "Ministry of Truth" from H. 4700 on the House floor. The question is will other
Republicans join us in removing it, or will they join Democrats in defending it?
