Air Force JROTC Awards Presented

The Third Annual Blue Ridge High School Air Force JROTC Awards Program and Banquet was held at Ebenezer Welcome Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 11.
U.S.A.F. Lt. Col. Laura Kinard presented Mat Gedenberg a four-year scholarship to any college that has an Air Force ROTC program.
The Blue Ridge H. S. AFJROTC Squadron earned the “Distinguished Unit Award with Merit” based on setting and achieving/exceeding Cadet Corps goals.
The Squadron also received “Exceeds Standards” recognition during the graded unit inspection conducted by USAF Area Administrator Col. Williford.
National Society of the SAR Participate in Furman Univ. Army ROTC Awards Ceremony

Nine graduating seniors successfully completed the requirements to receive commissions as Second Lieutenants in the United States Army or National Guard during commissioning ceremonies May 8, 2010. An awards ceremony was held on Friday, May 7th.
Awards were presented to cadets and members of the Military Science Department by officers of the Colonel Robert Anderson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Cadet Alex Moore, a freshman enrolled in the Furman Army ROTC program received an SAR medal and certificate.
Signed and numbered paintings by Doug Chaffie entitled The Southern Campaign were presented to LTC William Maddox and LTC Bill Price.
Upstate WWII Veterans Visit D.C. Memorials

Eighty World War II veterans from Upstate S.C. departed Greenville-Spartanburg Airport around 9:15 a.m., Tuesday, April 20, on board U.S. Airways flight 9090 to Washington, D.C.
As the plane taxied toward the gate area, two Reagan National Airport fire trucks, one on each side, presented a water cannon salute to the veterans.
When the veterans entered the airport they were greeted by well-wishers carrying American flags and patriotic posters.

World War II Vet Pays Respects to Soldier Who “Gave it All”
Spc Geoffrey A. Whitsitt, United States Army, Age 21 of Taylors, S.C., was Killed in Action when his vehicle was damaged by an improvised explosive device near Combat Outpost McClain in central Afghanistan’s Logar Province south of Kabul, on January 13, 2010.
He was assigned to the 118th Military Police Company (Airborne), 503rd Military Police Battalion (Airborne), 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne) with home base at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.
Post 3 Members Visit Norfolk Naval Base

Shortly after 6 a.m. on a rather cold Wednesday morning last month, forty-five American Legion Post 3 members left Greenville for a bus trip to Norfolk, VA.
The trip resulted from an eventful week that took place October 5-10, 2009. Greenville was chosen by the U.S. Navy Outreach as one of twenty-three cities in the United States for a group of U.S. Navy officers and sailors to visit and explain to citizens what the U.S. Navy is doing with regard to the “War On Terror,” as well as humanitarian projects around the world.
Maj. Rudolf Anderson Memorial Ceremony Held At Woodlawn Memorial Park

On Saturday, November 14, American Legion Post 3 members held a memorial service for Major Rudolf Anderson, Jr., at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
American Legion Post 3 Commander John Collins was Master of Ceremony. His opening remarks contained a brief outline of Rudy Anderson’s life growing up in Greenville, SC. He graduated from Greenville High School and later from Clemson College where he was a member of the Air Force ROTC program. After he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, he underwent flight training as a F-86 pilot and he flew combat missions over Korea during the Korean War.
Wade Hampton High Names General to “Wall Of Honor”

Wade Hampton High School Principal Lance Radford and Senior Aerospace Instructor Col. Ben Pittman presented the first annual veteran’s Wall of Honor award to Brigadier General Wayne Brock during a Veterans Day program in the school auditorium with the school’s Air Force JROTC cadets and invited local veterans, including 3 World War II veterans who were in attendance.
