MOAA Celebrates 40 Years in Greenville

Members of the Greenville Chapter, Military Officers Association of America celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the chapter by honoring past presidents of the Chapter during a dinner at the Greenville Hilton. Each past president present for the event was presented with a small gift as a token of appreciation for service to the chapter and the local community.
Wade Hampton High School Honors Veterans

Wade Hampton High School and the Air Force Junior ROTC Department honored veterans during a Veteran’s Day Ceremony November 10, 2010.
Brigadier General Lawrence W. Brock, a member of the Wade Hampton High School Class of 1976, currently serving in Afghanistan and home on R&R was the Wade Hampton High School Veteran Honoree for 2009. He introduced Colonel Francis M. “Mike” Belue, Chaplain U. S. Army (Retired) the 2010 Honoree.
Col. Belue served two tours as an enlisted man in Vietnam. After the war, he attended college and seminary and was commissioned as an Army Chaplain. Prior to his recent retirement, he served as a combat Army Chaplain in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Greenville and SC Council MOAA Chapter Officers Attend Chapter President’s Symposium

Southeast Regional Symposium Held in Jacksonville

Five Military Officers Association of America State Council and Greenville Chapter officers attended the 2010 MOAA Chapter President’s Symposium held September 16-18 in Jacksonville, Florida.
The symposium was MOAA’s Southeast Regional meeting attended by 427 council and chapter leaders and members of their families. They met for three days to learn about current issues of importance to MOAA members, chapter management best practices, and membership matters. Seminars were held on membership, grassroots support of legislation and community actions.

Presentation to the American Legion by Chip Howard

Chip Howard, manager and senior funeral director at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Greenville, South Carolina, addressed American Legion Post 3 during the August regular meeting.
Howard discussed the eligibility requirements for burial in a VA National Cemetery and the fact that space may not be reserved ahead of time. He presented excerpts from the Dignity Memorial Veterans Planning Guide used by Woodlawn, including the “truth about veteran’s funeral benefits.”

Local Veterans Honored at Haywood Estates

Greenville veterans were honored with a special celebration last Saturday at Haywood Estates retirement community, located at 1180 Haywood Road.
Haywood Estates residents, members of the American Legion Post 3, and more than 60 people from the local area attended the Freedom Days event, which included a presentation of the colors, patriotic music from The Upstate Senior Band, refreshments, patriotic decorations, and a special Wall of Honor dedication.
Cadet Bryce Tyson Completes Basic Training at West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Cadet Bryce Tyson, son of Bruce and Gwen Tyson of Greenville, completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy.
Tyson entered West Point June 28 and has successfully completed seven weeks of CBT. Also referred to as "Beast Barracks," CBT is one of the most challenging events a cadet will encounter over the course of their four years at the academy.
