Bob Jones University, in partnership with the Children’s Trust of South Carolina, will display a pinwheel garden at the main entrance to the campus during the month of April in honor of Child Abuse Awareness Month.
Since 2008, the bright blue pinwheel has served as the national symbol of child abuse prevention as it symbolizes a carefree and vibrant childhood–something every child deserves. This is the fifth year BJU has participated in this nationwide event.
“To raise awareness in our community, students in the BJU School of Education are planting a public pinwheel garden,” said Dr. Julie Hartman, professor and Division of Educational, Child and Family Studies chair. “Pinwheels inspire all of us to play a role in providing the best possible environment for every child to be nurtured and have the opportunity to grow into happy, healthy adults."
The School of Education conducts a variety of trainings for students in Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Trauma-Informed Practices. This year, due to COVID-19, other community-wide events have been postponed.
Students planted the gardens of over 250 pinwheels at the Wade Hampton entrance on April 8. The display will remain in place until April 29.
