Eddie Rogers as Gen. Wade Hampton III

Gen-Wade-HamptonEddie Rogers received a standing ovation for his portrayal of General Wade Hampton III in Greenville, Thursday night at the Phoenix Inn. An accurate recording of history would likely reveal Wade Hampton III to be the greatest South Carolinian who ever lived. It is appropriate that Greenville County has a highway and high school named in his honor. Two historical events tie Hampton to the Upcountry. Both of his great grandparents were massacred by Indians near what is now Greer. His grandfather, the first Wade Hampton, as a teenager survived only because he was away from the homestead hunting game at the time. When Gen. Wade Hampton III led the “Second American Revolution” during his campaign for Governor of South Carolina during “Reconstruction,” in 1876, a record crowd of thousands greeted him on University Ridge, the current location of Greenville County Square.
