Barrett-Austin-Funeral

PFC Barrett Lyle Austin, 20, of Easley, died April 21, 2013, in Landstuhl, Germany, from injuries sustained when the vehicle he was driving ran over an enemy improvised explosive device near Wardak Province, Afghanistan, on April 17.

PFC Austin was assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, GA.

He was born in Easley on Nov. 10, 1992. His parents are Curt and Yolanda Buck Austin. He was a 2011 graduate of Pickens High School and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley.

Survivors include his parents, his wife, Heather Hooker Austin, of Fort Stewart, GA; two sisters, Summer Harris and Jordan Austin of Easley; a nephew Machen Harris of Easley; grandparents, Don and Betty Austin of Pickens and Benny and Helen Buck of Darlington, SC, and his great grandmother, Gertie Jones of Darlington, SC.

A service to celebrate PFC Austin’s life was held on Wednesday, May 1st at 4 p.m. at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Dr. David Gallamore, Pastor of  Rock Springs Baptist Church, conducted the Memorial Service. Burial with full military honors was at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

Residents of Easley gathered along Highway 123, and Highway 93 to show their respect for a South Carolina hero. Pickens residents lined Highway 93 along the route that the funeral procession traveled to Hillcrest Memorial Park. Yellow ribbons were visible on mail boxes and trees in residential areas. Two Pickens Fire Dept. ladder trucks hoisted a large American Flag near the entrance to the cemetery.

American Legion Riders and Patriot Guard Riders escorted the funeral procession from the church to Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Several hundred riders, each holding an American Flag, lined the driveway and the wooded area overlooking the burial site.
