Top Ten Finalists Announced for 2012-13 GCS Teacher of the Year

Ten finalists have been selected in the 2012-13 Greenville County Teacher of the Year program.
They are, in alphabetical order: Abigail Cook, Chemistry, Wade Hampton High; Matt Critell, Kindergarten, Fork Shoals School; Jillian Grimsley, Fifth Grade, Stone Academy of Communication Arts; Jessica Jackson, Special Education, West Greenville School; Brian Morgan, Art, Duncan Chapel Elementary; Sara Newell, Fifth Grade, Sterling School; Will Ragland, Drama, Woodmont High; Rex Smith, Sixth Grade Science, League Academy of Communication Arts; Jennifer Valenti, Eighth Grade Spanish, Northwood Middle; and Sherryan Yarbrough, Kindergarten, Blythe Academy of Languages.
A Homecoming Celebration for Vietnam Veterans

Saturday, March 31st, thousands of Vietnam Veterans proudly displayed their former military branch of service ball caps, T-shirts, jackets and vests.
Some of the veterans remembered being told to buy civilian clothes and either throw away their uniforms or possibly burn them before returning to the States.
They didn’t want strangers to know where they had been.

From a Vietnam War Veteran
March 31, 2012, was a day that will live forever large in my memory. It was a day for which I shall be tremendously grateful as long as I live. Yesterday, I was one of more than 170 Vietnam Veterans and family members from Henderson County who were bussed to the Vietnam Veterans Homecoming Celebration at the Charlotte Motor Speedway by HonorAir. There we were joined by 65,000 other Vietnam Veterans and their families for as warm a welcome as any veterans have ever received from their country. It was the start of a welcome home movement for Vietnam Veterans that, while delayed for more than 40 years, was deeply appreciated by the veterans and their families.
Ladies Received the Winnie Davis Award

Left to Right - Jennifer Sawyer and Mosie Marlar both received the Winnie Davis Award from Joe Payne (right), SC Commander of Military Order of Stars and Bars on Saturday, March 17 at the University of SC Library at the Spring Awards Ceremony of the SC Division MOS&B. Mrs. Marlar received hers for her work with the SCV Camp #36 and especially the Museum and Library of Confederate History in Greenville. Mrs. Sawyer received hers for her work with the SCV Camp #40 of Laurens and particularly her work on the McGowan Brigade Monument placed by Camp 40 at the Spotsylvania Battlefield in May of 2009. Mrs. Marlar is the SC Society Order of Confederate Rose Treasurer and Mrs. Sawyer is the President and Historian of the JB Kershaw Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy in Laurens and is a member of the Captain William Farley Chapter OCR at Camp 40 in Laurens.

South Carolinians of good will need to know what Superintendent of Education, Dr. Mick Zais, is facing as he boldly attempts to carry out the mandate given to him by voters to improve education in South Carolina public schools. The Public Affairs Office of the SC Department of Education released the following information:

Congressmen Committed to “No Compromise Conservatism”

The state senators who re-drew the South Carolina Congressional District boundary lines to conform with the 2010 census split Greenville County from east to west. The northern part of the county remains part of the Fourth Congressional District represented by Rep. Trey Gowdy. The Southern part of the county now joins the Third Congressional District represented by Rep. Jeff Duncan. Both congressmen are first term Republicans and are part of a conservative congressional block that has made history in Washington by standing firm on the principles they went to Washington to defend.
Friends Stunned by Allegations Ron Wilson Ran Ponzi Scheme

Hearing in Columbia This Week
Most people who know, or thought they knew former State Education Board Member and Anderson County Councilman Ron Wilson fit into one of two categories: friends and enemies. Currently the latter are dominant.
Many friends who invested their life savings with Wilson are stunned by news reports that he was running a ponzi scheme and some were his victims. They now have nothing but a computer printout to show for their money. They have hopes that all is not lost, but Wilson does not return their phone calls and has now lost control of company assets.
