There's More for You in 2022
- By Alveda King
At the beginning of 2022, my pastor Theo McNair, Jr. preached a sermon entitled "There is More." The message encouraged me so much that I'd like to share a first quarter recap and perhaps help you prepare for what's to come.
In January 2022 we observed the annual March for Life, and the birthday of my uncle, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During this season, the Dobbs case, a controversial challenge to legal abortion in America was in full-fledged public debate. Lt. Governor Winsome Sears was sworn into office during this time.
The Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization is still a pending U.S. Supreme Court case dealing with the constitutionality of a 2018 Mississippi state law that banned abortion operations after the first 15 weeks of pregnancy.

No, School Boards Are Not 'Banning Books'
- By David Harsanyi
Accusations of left-wing free-speech authoritarianism -- whether through corporate restrictions, the state targeting "misinformation," the shouting down of dissent in universities or the canceling of dissenting voices -- are well-documented. Attempting to even the ledger, liberals have begun alleging that conservatives are engaging in "book bans" in public school districts.
The newest outrage on this front comes from a ProPublica investigation in which Superintendent Jeremy Glenn of Granbury Independent School District in North Texas is taped saying chilling things like: "I don't want a kid picking up a book, whether it's about homosexuality or heterosexuality, and reading about how to hook up sexually in our libraries." ("Minutes later," reports ProPublica, "after someone asked whether titles on racism were acceptable, Glenn said books on different cultures 'are great.'")

Ukraine: Can We Understand Russian Thinking?
- By Joseph M. Bianchi
Over the last few weeks, the images coming out of Ukraine have been horrific. Thousands of people have been displaced, hundreds have died—and there does not seem to be any negotiable end in sight. Russia’s Putin has seemingly unleashed a violent war of aggression on a neighboring, sovereign country who, for all intents and purposes, was simply minding its own business.
But are we getting the complete story, or simply what the Western media and power brokers want us to believe?
Indeed, there is no justification for the bombing of civilian targets and wreaking havoc on innocent men, women and children. Let that be clear.

Campus Free-Speech Problems Come Down to Culture
- By Veronique de Rugy
We've all heard stories about university administrators cracking down on free speech. But free expression is suffering even without these enablers, and that should worry us.
In a recent New York Times op-ed, University of Virginia senior Emma Camp powerfully defended freedom of expression as she described her own practice of self-censoring while on campus. In doing so, she highlighted the disappearance of free-speech culture, both in America at large and at a university with respectable free-speech credentials.
It is obvious that Camp values free expression and welcomes a diversity of viewpoints. In fighting for changes, she is also willing to face some consequences for her speech. Yet you feel her pain as she admits being fearful of speaking up, and her disappointment when she confesses to often taking the easy way out by remaining quiet.

Will More Defense Spending Translate to Better Security?
- By Veronique de Rugy
The brutal invasion of Ukraine by Russia has renewed conservatives' calls for large increases of our defense budget. The extra money, we are told, would fund more weapons to better prepare us to respond to aggression in a world that looks increasingly dangerous. As compelling as these arguments can be in a stressful time, it's not quite so simple.
Providing military defense is a valid function of the federal government. However, that doesn't give license to Congress to simply pile on more spending, even when there are dangers out there. Nor does it mean that more spending will result in a completely safe world for us Americans. That's in part because that world doesn't exist. There's only so much safety money can buy.

Disney Way Undermines Authority of Scripture
- By Children's Ministries International, Inc.
In Evangelicalism, there is a movement in children's ministry that promotes the wisdom and business practices of entertainment mogul Walt Disney (1901-1966). These influencers encourage children's pastors and children's ministry leaders to use Disney's ideas to build the children's ministry in their congregations. This methodology is known as the "Disney Way."
As with every innovative approach to ministry, this one must also be examined in the light of Scripture.
First, the Disney Way of children's ministry robs God of His glory. The Bible says all glory belongs to God (I Peter 4:11), and He doesn't share His glory with anyone (Isaiah 42:8, 48:11; Psalm 115:1).
If a local church successfully implements the Disney Way, and these methods effectively attract more kids to the children's ministry, who gets the credit? Not Christ. The praise goes to Disney and his genius. The Disney Way glorifies man by putting human will, human ability, and human achievement above God. Giving a man credit for church growth steals glory from God.

The Power of God in Politics
- By Mike LaPierre – On the Record
Politicians often neglect discussing the all-consuming nature of the Lord our God.
We may mention an awareness of the Creator or "touch base" with Him in a cursory prayer before or after a political event, but have you ever listened to a political figure wax eloquent and DECISIVE about the power of the GREAT I AM in the political arena?
The answer is a resounding NO! Even those with a ministerial background, now turned politicians, nibble around the edges when it comes to religion and politics. Instead, we leave it to the great political leaders of yesteryear who were men and women of faith to sound the alarm for faith, freedom, and virtue in the public square of 2022. Where are our Christian political leaders today? Why are they cowering in the corners of servitude and bondage of the secular humanist political arrangement?
