During a television broadcast over the weekend, President Trump announced a compromise proposal to open the government. It included the $5.7 billion he originally requested to fund the border wall along with additional resources to enforce border security. However, the big trade-off would be his support for a three-year renewal for individuals receiving DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and temporary protected status (TPS). This would be amnesty for over a million illegal immigrants!
DACA has been illegal and unconstitutional since former President Obama implemented the program in 2012. Afterward, the United States saw a major influx of illegal immigrants flooding across the border to receive work benefits through DACA. Allowing this program to continue would undermine President Trump’s promise to secure our borders.
This week, the Senate plans to pass this compromise. The End the Shutdown and Secure the Border Act not only grants amnesty to illegal immigrants, but it does not allow President Trump to build the wall using the new steel wall prototype that he has chosen to best protect the border. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is strongly in favor of this proposal and is gathering votes at this moment. We must let our Senators know that the American people do not want to trade the border wall for amnesty!
