From a creationist perspective, the Moon is understood not as the result of naturalistic processes over billions of years, but as a purposefully designed object created by God, primarily described in the Bible—especially in the Book of Genesis.

This is in contrast to the atheistic perspective, which is filled largely with naturalistic models that have been either demonstrated to be false or patched up with untestable just-so stories.

Created Intentionally by God

The Creationist Perspective on the moon starts with Genesis 1, which states that God made “the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night.” Now, contrary to some claims made by scoffers, this does not imply that the moon creates its own light. It is simply indicating that one of the moon's purposes is to provide light for the Earth. The fact that light is reflected from the sun does not change this purpose.

Among its purposes, it also serves as a sign for seasons and years. These signs also include the sun and the stars.  The moon, as a sign, is primarily that of a month.

The Moon is therefore a direct act of creation that was designed for a purpose. It was not an accident resulting from the chance of a giant impact. It needs to be noted that one astronomer illustrated the problems of providing a naturalistic explanation for the moon by stating that the best explanation was observational error. This, of course, was not intended to be taken seriously, but it does illustrate the difficulty that they have in producing adequate explanations for its existence.

Young Age of the Moon

Young-Earth creationists tend to estimate the age of the Moon to be about 6,000 years old because it was created during the Creation Week. The date of the creation week is based on pre-flood and post-flood genealogies, which gives a clear time scale. Now, you might be able to stretch it out a little bit by assuming a few gaps, but there is no way you can stretch it out for billions of years. There are actually several pieces of evidence that tend to support a young moon over an old moon.

The first is that the moon is receding from the Earth at a rate of 3.8cm per year.  As a result, the Artemis II astronauts have a whopping 2 meters further to go than Apollo 17. The accuracy of this recession is the result of measurements using equipment left behind by Apollo astronauts. Now, when you project back, this orbital recession, you get a maximum age for the moon of 1.171 billion years ago. This tends to support a young moon rather than an old one, because this is naturally explained by a young moon but extremely difficult for a 4.5-billion-year-old moon.

Before the first unmanned landings on the moon, there were concerns that there would be miles-thick layers of meteoritic dust on the lunar surface that probes and even people would simply sink into. In fact, you can even find old movies depicting this predicted problem. Direct observations of the lunar surface show barely enough dust to create footprints. Now, proponents of an old moon have invented ways to try to explain this. However, such models are all untestable, while the results are actually predicted by a young moon model.

Now, none of these directly disproves an old moon; after all, it is impossible to falsify models for which any excuse can be invented to explain away failed predictions. However, they do tend to support a young moon, including fulfilling predictions from it.

Designed for Earth’s Stability

Creationists will often emphasize the Moon’s role in making Earth habitable, pointing out that the Moon serves some important functions for the Earth. Usually pointing out that these functions are very important to life on earth, and that it is, and that is what we would expect if the moon were designed.

Tides help to regulate ocean ecosystems; without this regulation, much of the existing sea life would not be possible. The moon helps to provide the Earth with axial stability. That is, it keeps Earth’s tilt steady, helping to stabilize the climate. The moon helps provide light at night, preventing total darkness, making it easier for some animals to survive. These are seen as evidence of intentional design and go against the idea that it is just a coincidence.

“Signs and Seasons.”

Genesis 1:14 says celestial bodies are for “signs, and for seasons.” The moon's orbit is the original basis for a month. Which originally was equal to the moon's 28-day cycle. This formed the basis for the Old Testament Biblical calendars and festivals. The moon has historically been used in timekeeping for many reasons. This includes the fact that it has a consistent pattern of its phases due to its orbit around the Earth.

Critique of Secular Models

Creationists often question the widely accepted giant impact hypothesis. Concerns are often raised that it fails to explain many of the Moon's features.  It does a poor job of explaining why the Moon has a similar composition to Earth. It also does a very poor job of explaining the angular momentum of the Earth-Moon system. Furthermore, this model lacks direct observational evidence for such an event. It is simply a just-so story invented to explain the existence of the moon, when all the other models have failed miserably. In fact, one astronomer joked that because of the difficulty of explaining the moon from a naturalistic perspective, the best explanation for the Moon is observational error. Now, of course, he was joking, but even jokes often make good points.

Creationists tend to think that the evidence best fits the Moon being created in approximately its current orbit and form. By the way, the reason for saying approximately is that not only has lunar recession caused the moon to spiral out a little bit since creation, but it has also been pulled by other objects, such as the sun.

Fine-Tuning Argument

The Moon’s size and distance are just right to allow perfect solar eclipses, because the Moon and Sun appear nearly the same size as seen from Earth. This is evidence of fine-tuning and, consequently, intentional design.

Minimal Geological Activity

The Moon shows limited tectonic activity, with surface features appearing relatively unchanged. This is consistent with a younger age, rather than billions of years of evolution.  Notions about the Earth and the Moon being billions of years old are based on the assumption of a purely naturalistic origin. The simple fact that the lunar surface is relatively fresh in many areas is consistent with a recent creation.

Conclusion

From a creationist standpoint, the Moon is purposefully designed, relatively young, functionally important for life on Earth, and has evidence of divine creation rather than natural processes. It is not just a random cosmic coincidence, as a naturalistic perspective would require assuming. It is not the result of a giant collision, a model with its own problems. Put simply, the moon shows evidence of being Earth’s companion for a purpose. That ultimately is the creationist perspective on the Moon.
