UPSTATE SOUTH CAROLINA

Monday, August 13

  • First Day of School for Teachers!  Many schools will host breakfast events with a welcome from the principal at approximately 7:45am.  Teachers will participate in activities, continue classroom set up and prepare student technology.  We have more than 250 “first year” teachers.  I’m able to connect you with some of them if that is an angle you’d like to pursue.
  • Ralph Chandler Middle School teachers will be treated to a memorable school year kickoff celebration titled “Back to School: Back to Basics”.  It will be an 80’s themed celebration to launch into an amazing school year filled with high academic achievement, joy, health, and fun for all! Faculty members will arrive at Golden Lanes Bowling Alley, 108 Balcome Blvd., Simpsonville, SC at 8am. A DJ will broadcast live from the event until 11 am.
  • We have 19 new teachers starting with us through GATE.  The Greenville Alternative Teacher Education program allows college graduates with a degree in math, science or foreign language to bring their real world experience to the classroom.  The coaching, mentoring and training program provides these new employees with support and certification.  It helps us hire top quality teachers in hard to fill subject areas. The program is in its third year. https://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/News/main.asp?titleid=1808gate

  • New construction!  This school year we are proud to open the middle school wing of Rudolph Gordon.  We will provide a “first look” media tour and interview opportunities in the state-of-the-art building.  We will meet you at the front office at 10:30am.
  • LaunchGVL summer wrap party and fall launch.  We will celebrate our partnership with the Greenville Chamber to match qualified students with PAID internships at local businesses. Interns and industry reps will attend the reception at 5pm at the Greenville Chamber.  The deadline for sign up for the fall session is 8/15. http://greenvillechamber.org/launchgvl/

  • Teacher of the Year announcement.  Join us at the TD Convention Center at 8am to recognize all of our school level teachers of the year and name our 2018-2019 GCS Teacher of the Year.  This is a surprise for the winner and is a wonderful video opportunity.  We will arrange for the winner interviews on site or at his/her school.

  • Bus driver/bus safety media availability at 10am, Taylors Bus Center, 2805 Locust Hill Road, Taylors.  We will have experienced bus drivers available for interviews and ride-alongs.  Bus supervisors and safety trainers will also be on site.  We would love to remind the community that they will be seeing buses on the road starting Monday 8/20 and that they need to be aware of the rules of the road regarding bus stops. We are coordinating with Highway Patrol to have a representative on site.
