Sherman’s Campaign against Atlanta 1864
- By Mike Scruggs

The Legacy of Total War Strategy
Many historians date the Atlanta campaign from late April 1864 to September 2, 1864. The September 2 date, however, only marks the withdrawal of General Hood’s Confederate forces from Jonesboro and the official surrender by Atlanta Mayor, James Calhoun. That leaves out an important part of the history. It was not until November 12 that Sherman destroyed Atlanta by ordering all buildings except homes and churches to be burned. Many homes and churches, however, were caught up in the conflagration.
Union forces had begun to probe Confederate strength south of Ringgold, Georgia on April 24 with the objective of a major advance on Atlanta, an important Confederate railroad center and supply depot. Up until the middle of May, General Joe Wheeler’s Confederate cavalry were able to frustrate Sherman’s enormous army of over 100,000 men attempting to advance toward Atlanta.

Pennsylvania’s Heated Republican U.S. Senate Primary

What’s behind Kathy Barnette’s Surge?
There are five U.S. Senate primaries on May 17. Pennsylvania may be the most important, because it is key to Republican hopes to recapture a Republican Senate majority. It has also become close and hotly contested with the two front-runners being unexpectedly challenged by an outspoken ultra-MAGA candidate.
Kathy Barnette is a 50-year-old black conservative woman. She is a strong Christian and considers herself an ultra-MAGA. A recent Fox poll shows her support surging in the eight candidate primary and closing fast on front-runners Dr. Mehmet Oz, 61, a TV celebrity heart surgeon, and Dave McCormick 57, decorated Army war veteran, businessman, and former U.S. Treasury Undersecretary. President Trump has endorsed Oz, and Texas Senator Ted Cruz has endorsed McCormick. Iowa Senator Joni Ernst bravely endorsed Barnette.

Reviewing the Danger and the Soft Power Solution
The Federation of Americans for Immigration Reform (FAIR) recently estimated that there are 15.5 million illegal immigrants in the United States. This was up 9.4 percent from the previous year and is now growing even faster because of the Biden Administration’s deliberately accelerated unlawful open-door immigration policies. Thus it would be conservative to estimate an illegal population of over 20 million by 2014, the next Presidential Election Year. FAIR also estimated that the fiscal costs alone would amount to $200 billion annually by 2025.

Voters Must Wake Up and Ask Questions
According to North Carolinians For Immigration Reform and Enforcement (NCFIRE), an organization that has been documenting and publishing monthly statistics on illegal immigrant rape and sexual assault on children since January 2009, in 2021 there were 1,205 rapes or sexual assaults of children in North Carolina by 284 illegal immigrants. We need to start asking people running for public office in North Carolina why this has been happening for over a decade and is getting worse. The latest monthly report for March 2022 documented 110 rapes or sexual assaults of North Carolina children by 30 illegal immigrants. Why aren’t our radio, television, and print media raising an alarm and protest? Are the facts of these crimes and statistics ever raised in the General Assembly and county commissions and school boards?

Advisory to Republican Primary Voters
According to the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), the estimated number of illegal immigrants in the United States increased by 1.13 million to 11.35 million from January 2021 to January 2022 and is increasing by more than 100,000 per month. That may double to 200,000 per month by the end of May, when President Biden removes the Article 42 power that allowed expulsion of illegal immigrants posing a Covid or other health risks to the United States. Many estimates of the illegal immigrant population are much higher. In fact, the situation is now so chaotic that accurate estimates are nearly impossible.
CIS also found the number of foreign-born in the United States increased by 1.7 million to a new high of 46.7 million, over 14 percent of the total population. In 1970, the foreign-born percentage was less than 5 percent. Not only is illegal immigration out of control, but cheap-labor legal immigration is excessive and exploded by chain migration under loose rules that result in an average of 3.45 sponsored relatives per new legal immigrant.
