Cecil Buchanan woke up Sunday morning knowing that The American Legion James F. Daniel, Jr. Post 3 would honor him by naming the War Museum for him. He did not know that he would also receive special recognition from the State of South Carolina.

Chuck Rouse, First Vice Commander, was the Master of Ceremonies for the War Museum Dedication Ceremony. Post 3 Commander Don Patterson welcomed everyone to Post 3 War Museum. WarMuseumDedication-03

Dr. Stephen Clyborne, Pastor of Earle Street Baptist Church, delivered the invocation.

American Legion Post 3 Color Guard presented the colors, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was recited, and the National Anthem was sung by the “Bald4Him” Quartet.

Chuck Rouse introduced War Museum Director Peter Butchart for a short history of the War Museum.

Butchart introduced War Museum Assistant Director Carroll Kelly for some comments about Cecil Buchanan.

Kelly then asked former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, David Wilkins, to read a letter to Cecil Buchanan from SC Gov. Nikki Haley.

The letter stated: On behalf of the people of South Carolina, I am pleased to award you the “Order of the Palmetto” in recognition of your exemplary service and all that you have done over the years.

Mr. Wilkins presented the framed “Order of the Palmetto” Award to Cecil D. Buchanan on behalf of Gov. Nikki Haley.

Mr. Buchanan is a Korean War Veteran and has been a member of the American Legion for 43 years and is a past Post 3 Commander. He has been recognized as Legionnaire of the Year by four past Post 3 Commanders.

He was the manager of the American Legion Fairgrounds, located on White Horse Road for 18 years.

He received a Proclamation from Greenville County for his dedication effort to erect the Veterans Memorial Wall at Greenville County Square.

He received the “Congressional Spirit of Freedom” Award from then 4th District Rep. Jim DeMint for his efforts to maintain cemeteries that contain veterans’ grave sites.

He was recognized by Gov. Mark Sanford with the Silver Crescent Award.

The keynote speaker for the dedication ceremony was Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-SC.

Assistant Museum Director Carroll Kelly and Legionnaire Bill Moore then unveiled the Bronze plaque that is now attached to the American Legion James F. Daniel, Jr. Post 3 building.

The “Bald4Him” Quartet sang, God Bless America, and benediction was given by Dr. Stephen Clyborne.

A reception was held downstairs in the dining area.

Assistant Museum Director Carroll Kelly was the driving force in obtaining and documenting the necessary information that would determine if Cecil Buchanan was eligible for this state’s highest civilian award.

Cecil Buchanan is now Director Emeritus of the Cecil D. Buchanan War Museum.
