H. 4059 Would Require Driver Involved in Fatal Accident to be Tested for alcohol or drugs
The South Carolina House of Representatives Judiciary Sub-Committee met on Thursday, March 4, to consider a bill proposed by Rep. Tommy Stringer of District 18 that includes the Greer-Blue Ridge area of Greenville County. The bill, H. 4059 would require a driver (such as in the recent Ludwig case) to be tested for alcohol or drugs if the accident results in a fatality.

Indigenous missionaries to Peru and the Czeck Republic were guests at a recent meeting of the 16th Regiment, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Camp 36 at the Phoenix Inn in Greenville. Alonzo Ramirez of Peru and Pavel Bartos from the Czech Republic are sponsored by Woodruff Road Presbyterian Church and were escorted by Bill Johnson, a member of the church and the SCV.

Dr. John Chandler Griffin was the guest speaker at the February 25th meeting of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Greenville.
Dr. Griffin earned a scholarship to Presbyterian College as a high school quarterback, dropped out of college and joined the Eighty-second Airborne Division. He discovered his love for writing sending long letters back home. After completing his military service, he earned a degree in English and completed work for his Ph.D. and began teaching. He retired in 1998 as a full professor and received the honorary title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus.

Project Receiving $2.2 Million in ARRA Funds
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) have granted approximately $2.2 million for the rehabilitation of the Slater Sanitary Sewer System (SSSS). Renewable Water Resources (ReWa) initiated the grant funding application process with Metropolitan Sewer Sub-District (MSSD) on behalf of SSSS from the Federal America Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Stimulus Package. SC Senator Phillip W. Shoopman, House Speaker Pro Tempore Harry F. Cato and Greenville County Councilman Joe Dill were key supporters in securing the much-needed grant funding for this project.
Sloan Asks Court to Prohibit Disbursement of “Council District Expense Funds”

Council Considered New Rules at March 2 Meeting
Edward D. Sloan, Jr., and the South Carolina Public Interest Foundation petitioned the Court of Common Pleas in Greenville Friday, February 26, to prohibit Greenville County from “disbursement of funds from the Council District Expense Fund.”
The complaint for declaratory judgment and injunctive relief was filed just two working days prior to the Council’s scheduled meeting to receive advice from legal council regarding rule changes necessary to comply with the Feb. 8 ruling by Judge John C. Few that the “Council District Expense Fund portion of the 2006-2007 budget for Greenville County is declared to be an impermissible delegation of legislative authority, and thus to be illegal.”

World War II Vet Pays Respects to Soldier Who “Gave it All”
Spc Geoffrey A. Whitsitt, United States Army, Age 21 of Taylors, S.C., was Killed in Action when his vehicle was damaged by an improvised explosive device near Combat Outpost McClain in central Afghanistan’s Logar Province south of Kabul, on January 13, 2010.
He was assigned to the 118th Military Police Company (Airborne), 503rd Military Police Battalion (Airborne), 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne) with home base at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.
Post 3 Members Visit Norfolk Naval Base

Shortly after 6 a.m. on a rather cold Wednesday morning last month, forty-five American Legion Post 3 members left Greenville for a bus trip to Norfolk, VA.
The trip resulted from an eventful week that took place October 5-10, 2009. Greenville was chosen by the U.S. Navy Outreach as one of twenty-three cities in the United States for a group of U.S. Navy officers and sailors to visit and explain to citizens what the U.S. Navy is doing with regard to the “War On Terror,” as well as humanitarian projects around the world.
