Bob Jones University President Steve Pettit Signs Three-Year Contract

The following statements were released regarding the ratification of the president’s contract by the Bob Jones University Board of Trustees and the signing of the contract by Dr. Steve Pettit on the afternoon of Thursday, January 19, 2023.

“Since the announcement of the Board of Trustees vote to re-elect Dr. Steve Pettit as president of Bob Jones University on November 17, 2022, the Board of Trustees and Dr. Pettit have been working together cooperatively to come to today’s announcement of a unanimously approved contract.

BJU Presents the Canadian Brass

Bob Jones University will present the Canadian Brass Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Founder’s Memorial Amphitorium. The group previously performed at BJU in 1997 and 2013.
Founded in 1970, Canadian Brass is known for its member's proficiency in various instruments that allow them to play a program ranging from classical favorites to new arrangements. Chuck Daellenbach, the only remaining original member of the group, plays the tuba. Trumpeters, a hornist and a trombonist round out the ensemble.

BJU Bruins Host 51st Annual Invitational Basketball Tournament

The Bob Jones University Bruins will host 10 high schools from around the country to compete in the 51st annual Invitational Basketball Tournament Jan. 24 - 27 in the Davis Field House.
"We're excited to be able to host these high school programs here at Bob Jones University," Bruins Director of Athletics Dr. Neal Ring said. “This is one of the highlights of the year for BJU and we’re excited to have so many student-athletes on our campus. We look forward to a great time with some great competition.”

Christopher Cole Brethouwer Graduates from Furman University

Furman University announced that approximately 40 students received degrees in December 2022. These students have the option of participating in the upcoming May 2023 Commencement Ceremony.
Christopher Cole Brethouwer of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and German Studies and a minor in Environmental Studies.

Religious Freedom for Christian Colleges: A Victory in Federal Court

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by the LGBTQ-sponsored “Religious Exemption Accountability Project” (REAP) asserting that “young and vulnerable” LGBTQ+ persons are “at the mercy of religiously affiliated, taxpayer-funded social service and educational institutions that often turn them away or force them into the closet.”
The students who litigated against the U.S. Department of Education and the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) wanted to overturn “a provision of Title IX that allows religious colleges to seek exemptions” from a law barring “sex-based discrimination.” Title IX is part of a 1972 measure and states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

BJU Students Volunteer on Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day

Bob Jones University students, faculty and staff will participate in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day Monday, Jan. 16.
Jordan Baun, who serves as coordinator for the BJU Center for Global Opportunities, collaborates with organizations in the Upstate to place volunteers. BJU President Steve Pettit encourages students, faculty and staff to view MLK Day as a “day on rather than a day off.”

North Greenville University Student Receives CIC/UPS Scholarship

North Greenville University student Christopher Jackson majoring in Criminal Justice and Legal Studies from Inman, SC, has been selected to receive a CIC/UPS Scholarship provided by the SC Independent Colleges & Universities (SCICU) and its national partner, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, DC.
Nationally, CIC, through the CIC/UPS Educational Endowment, provided more than $1.4 million in student scholarships to support student success at private colleges and universities. This year, SCICU conveyed $433,200 through 11 scholarship programs to 273 eligible students in 21 South Carolina private colleges.
