A Bell OH-58D Keowa helicopter model of the one that Captain Kimberly Hampton flown is now displayed as a memorial in front of the Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library on Biltmore Road. It took nearly five years for Jim Garrison, supporters, politicans and military officers to find a identical helicoter model that she flew. The dedicated memorial is called Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Park. Hampton's helicopter was shot down over Fallujah, Iraq in January 2004. She was the first female pilot in U.S. history shot down and killed as a result of hostile fire.

James W. Oxford, National Commander of The American Legion, was invited to speak to a joint session of the state assembly.

National Commander of The American Legion James W. Oxford is a native of Lenoir, N.C. Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Oxford was an aviation technician for the A-6 Intrader. After being discharged as a Sergeant in 1970 Oxford joined the North Carolina Nation Guard. Subsequently retired as a Colonel after 34 years of Military Service.

WASHINGTON -- The United States Space Force (USSF) is the space operations service branch of the United States Armed Forces. The sixth and youngest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, it was the first branch of the military established since the formation of the U.S. Air Force in 1947. The antecedent of the Space Force was the Air Force Space Command which was a major command of the U.S. Air Force. The Space Command was formed on September, 1982 with responsibility for space warfare operations. The National Defense Authorization Act for 2020 re-designated the Air Force Space Command as the U.S. Space Force, and established it as an independent branch of the U.S. Armed Forces on December 20, 2019.
