Who, you might reasonably ask, was “Atayataghronghta”? I had never heard that Native American name in my many years of historical reading and research centered around our Revolutionary War period, but I had once come across his English name a long time ago: Joseph Louis Cook (c. 1737-1814), also called Colonel Louis Cook in historical records. It wasn’t until I read his life story in my wife’s D.A.R. magazine: American Spirit, November/December 2021 Issue (Vol. 155, #6), in an article by Amanda Taylor, titled, “Unwavering Dedication to the Cause”, that I was able to finally put his Indian and his English names together and discover a not unknown, but long underappreciated, American patriot whose “dedication to the cause” of American liberty should be much better known.

How could—why would—a man whom Americans have looked upon as one of their heroes for decades, descend into the ranks of those who turn their faces away from the torments and brutalities that some human beings inflict upon other human beings? Such is the usually unspoken question that has swirled around the life of Dwight Eisenhower (1890-1969), Supreme Commander of the Normandy Invasion of WW11 and later President of the United States. In the first two parts of this article I reviewed the history of the notorious forced repatriation of millions of anti-communist refugees back into their countries of origin (in Russia and much of Central and Eastern Europe), which began even before WW11 ended, and which became known as “Operation Keelhaul”.

In part 1 of this article I mentioned the fact that as early as December, 1954, an ex-candy manufacturer from Boston, Robert Welch, Jr., at the request of several friends with whom he had been discussing the background of General, and by then—President Dwight Eisenhower, had a discussion with some friends and business associates that turned into a letter that in 1963 became a self-published book titled, THE POLITICIAN. One of the chapters of that letter-turned-into-a-book was called, “Operation Keelhaul”. Except for those unfortunates who had survived that dastardly “crime against humanity” which occurred from just before the end of WW11 through early 1947, very little information regarding this horror was available to the American public without extensive research. Robert Welch was, to my knowledge, virtually the first writer who had done that research and was determined to inform a few of his friends and later, thousands of people, about one of the worst atrocities that had ever been perpetrated against large numbers of innocent people, atrocities that had been committed by people who should have known better—the American and British military, at the direction of top ranked American generals.

I wasn’t quite old enough to vote for the re-election of President Dwight Eisenhower during his 1956 presidential re-election campaign, although I would have if I could have (one had to be 21 years old to vote for President until 1971, when it was lowered to age 18).

A long time ago (actually in 1956, my second year in university—which is a ‘long time ago’ for sure), I took a public speaking class. I really enjoyed that semester, and I’ve done a fair amount of public speaking since those days, an activity that I do enjoy. One of the class assignments was to come up with a “proposal” to accomplish something unusual or difficult, or both. Searching for a suitable topic, I suddenly came up with a “eureka--I have found it” moment (with a ‘tip of the hat’ to the ancient Sicilian philosopher, Archimedes—c. 287-212B.C.). I had recently been reading, for my very first time, about the loss of the passenger liner, RMS Titanic in 1912. What better “unusual” topic could there be, in those halcyon days of 1956, then to come up with a proposal to “RAISE THE TITANIC”, which became my talk’s title?
So I conceived a plausible (for those days) idea on how to raise the wreckage of that famous vessel, once it was discovered (a minor detail that my proposal assumed had been overcome, although Dr. Robert Ballard wouldn’t find the Titanic’s wreck until 1985, and discover that it was in two large pieces). As I recall, my 15-minute talk was a big hit with my classmates, and I received a high mark from my professor. Interestingly, my 1956 speech about raising that famous lost ship was a forerunner of an idea that the author, Clive Cussler, also developed, because back in the 1970’s he wrote his book: “Raise the Titanic”, which was made into a thrilling film of that same name in 1976. The story was riveting and the musical score by the late, great composer, John Barry, was one of his very best and most melodic, exceeded only by his score for one of my very favorite films, “Somewhere In Time.” I’m glad that the book was written, the movie made, and the wonderful music composed. But I had the idea first!

Knowledge, Determination, and Faith Are Needed Now to Save Our Nation!

Daniel Webster’s last sentence in the paragraph above, pretty much explains why the John Birch Society was founded in 1958 by Robert Welch, and what is really needed to preserve the rapidly deteriorating remnants of our Constitutional Republic and restore it to its former position of respect and nobility. Mr. Welch was a true ‘renaissance man’ who was knowledgeable on many subjects, particularly our American heritage under constitutional law. He recognized the “downward trend” among his countrymen of the 1940’s and 1950’s to accept the push toward ever-larger and more meddlesome government, thrusting its ever-more-intrusive, and increasingly abusive, presence into the lives of all Americans.

Action Cures Fear

A couple of years ago the Times Examiner published my series of three articles that examined the life of Christian missionary to China, U.S. Army Captain, Rev. John Birch. This young but intrepid man was only 27 years old when he was murdered by the Chinese communists in China, soon after the end of WW11, during the intense three-way war for control of that huge nation between the Chinese Nationalist real government, the Chinese communist insurrectionists, and the invading military from Imperial Japan, a war that was ultimately won in 1949 by the Chinese communist butchers, courtesy of a great deal of help from their communist-sympathizing fellow travelers in the U.S. government, especially in the U.S. Dept. of State. Birch’s life and adventures in China from 1940 to 1945 would provide ample material for a block buster adventure movie, if we had any real movie-makers left who have not capitulated to being controlled by the dirty money provided to the Hollyweird studios by the Chinese communist party, the very descendants of those who MURDERED Rev./Captain John Birch in August of 1945.

That’s perhaps the most pertinent question facing us today, isn’t it? A recent article in The New American Magazine, published on March 8, 2021 featuring the insights of C. Mitchel Shaw, titled The Great Awakening, prompted me to reflect on whether or not Americans are truly “awakening” to the dangers posed to their freedom under our increasingly disregarded 1787 Constitution, or are so “woke” by the lies of the main stream media and their almost cult-like and slavish adherence to the babblings of the “gods” of the despicable social media—the collectivist churls who are determined to tell Americans, especially our younger citizens, WHAT to think, WHAT to dislike, and WHO to permit to exercise the increasingly nebulous concept of “free speech”, that they are essentially almost useless in the fight for freedom’s preservation.

Should Christians Be Involved In Politics?

Well, should they? That seems to be a somewhat divisive question of late. Perhaps it depends on how one defines “politics”. Should those of us who identify as Christians, particularly the “born-again variety”, involve ourselves in the often dishonest and somewhat sordid and divisive “blood sport” known as “politics” throughout much of American history, and especially over the past century or so? Should we allow ourselves to be immersed, to one degree or another, in the “mud-slinging”, the invectives, the anger, the breakup of family and friends, even the violence that is being deliberately induced within our culture over recent decades—and especially in the past year or two-- by the lovers of “politics”, much of it the leftist/progressive/communist version, as they confront the lovers of “constitutional government”, the form that was established for us by the men and women who founded this nation? Is a clash of civilizational survival imminent due to this fascination that a significant portion of humanity has with “politics” rather than with “principles”. Ah, those ARE questions to ponder, aren’t they? Let’s delve into it.

Quid Est Veritas? Ecce Homo!

You know, in certain respects one almost feels sorry for Pontius Pilate, the Roman Procurator, or Governor, of the Roman Empire’s Province of Judea from 26 A.D. to 36 A.D. Judea, especially its capital, Jerusalem, was full of quarrelsome and troublesome Jews whom the Romans considered to be “religious fanatics”. Here was Pilate—the most powerful representative of Caesar’s government in Judea, who had a reputation for corruption and cruelty, supported by thousands of battle-hardened Roman soldiers who were all too willing to sink their short swords (the famous 20” Roman ‘gladius’) into the flesh of those pesky Jews—caught, in effect, between the rock of upholding Caesar’s laws—and not wanting to condemn Jesus-- and a hard place of placating a mob of fanatics threatening to start a riot at best, or complain to Caesar, at worst, that he-Pilate-was “coddling” a man who proclaimed that he was “king of the Jews”, thus violating one of their most sacred laws. That he was part of an eternal drama that had been conceived by our Heavenly Father in Eternity past, before time, space, and matter existed, was not remotely a part of his thinking that day. But Pilate was an “actor” in the most important drama that ever had or ever would happen in the universe—a drama that had been ordained by our Creator before there was a “universe”.

Hello to everyone. My name is Hayley Lamb, and you can see my picture at the top of this page. It was taken recently at my human Aunt Cindy’s house, where she chained me in her kitchen because of my long-time perfectly reasonable determination, whenever I visit her, of getting rid of those horrible cats that she has allowed to live in her house. Just because I caught one of her cats a short time ago and had its neck in my mouth, and just because it was making loud and strange noises, is no reason to keep me chained while those stupid cats run all over the house. Why any humans would tolerate cats in their house (or in the city in which they live) is beyond me. Humans are always difficult to figure out. Have you noticed? But more on that later.

So Just When Did The First American Revolution Begin? 1775? Maybe Not!

We all know that our first glorious Revolution of the British American colonies began on April 19, 1775, when the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” was fired on the hallowed public “green” in Lexington, Massachusetts, a place I’ve walked on several times over the years. (It’s one of my very favorite places in the entire nation). Eight colonists were killed by the British Regulars on or near the Green, and ten were wounded. That’s when it started. Right? Then, it began to blossom a few hours later in Concord, Massachusetts, a few miles from Lexington, as our guys made a stand against that same group of British regulars at the Old North Bridge, over which I’ve walked several times (the several times rebuilt bridge, that is). So April 19, 1775 is the day that our first American Revolution began. Everybody knows that (well, everybody used to know that, but today not everybody does know it).

A native of Cleveland, Ohio W. H. (Bill) Lamb was graduated from Cleveland State University (Ohio) in 1960, and relocated to South Carolina in 1964. For many years he was an Industrial Engineer, Chief Industrial Engineer, and plant manager in the steel, electronics, and apparel industries in Ohio, South Carolina, and Alabama.
