Ashamed to
Ashamed to "Wrap Yourself in the Flag?" You shouldn't be!

One of the benefits of living a long time is that a person can mentally retrieve many recollections  of people and places and events that were significant to him and to many others, once upon a time.  More and more I find myself drawn to an era and its unique remembrances that has just about disappeared from our people’s mental histories,  a time that is almost as unknown to today’s younger Americans as the time of our great-grandparents was unknown to us.  That time, for me, was the World War 11 era, from the late 1930’s up through the late-1950’s.  That was my “golden age”, and those who shared those halcyon years with me know that in many respects it was a much different, and far better, country then compared to the one in which we live today.  I’m saddened for those of you who will never know how wonderful it truly was.

Last time I reviewed how I first met Dr. Anne, and how she prepared for her call from God to be a Christian missionary.  We also reported on some of her “challenges” and victories centered around her work in Haiti, which many, if not most, Americans would consider as being too dangerous and too frustrating.  But as Dr. Anne has amply demonstrated, “with God NOTHING is impossible”, and overcoming problems is a result of strong and fervent prayer, even overcoming a fractured hip on the day before she was to return to the U.S.  Recall that Dr. Anne first went to Haiti in 1987.  I’ll pick up her story at that point:

No—this wonderful story isn’t about me.  I’d like to tell you, in her own words, about a friend that I met several years ago at the business in which I work part time (writing for The Times Examiner seems to be my “full time” job).  We had another mutual friend who would tell me about the “adventures” of a missionary/doctor friend of hers, and eventually I got a chance to meet this unique lady, a physician/surgeon/missionary to Haiti whose name is Dr. Anne Livingston, during her occasional visits back to Greenville.

One of the most divisive issues facing Americans today is the issue of immigration into the U.S. – most especially the truly troubling ILLEGAL variety of immigration!  For decades, and probably much longer, we have been faced with the specter of hordes of “undocumented” invaders crossing over our borders, or overstaying their visas, for sundry purposes --  ostensibly to seek a better life for themselves and their children and become “WELFARE LEECHES” but, in some cases, to infiltrate their poisonous hatred of our relatively free American culture into our body politic, as they seek to extend  their insane and Satanically-induced Islamic beliefs and violence from their own despotic countries into ours.

(I’m indebted to an article in the November/December 2018 Daughters of the American Revolution magazine, American Spirit, entitled: “On The Oregon Trail”, by Bill Hudgins, for first bringing to my attention the now almost forgotten American hero, Marie Dorion (ca. 1786-1850), and from which article I quote and paraphrase freely.  Other sources from which I quote somewhat freely will be listed at the end.)

The (ficticoius)
The (ficticoius) Lake Isle of Innisfree, as described in Irish Poet William "Yeats'" Poem.

What, you ask, is “an Isle of Innisfree”?  It is a mystical place that resides in your memories, carefully hidden away from “outsider” eyes, available only to the one whose memory vault is locked securely from those who didn’t share one or more of those “ancient reminiscences” with you, such as a parent, a sibling, or a childhood friend.  Except for “bits and pieces”, one’s “Isle of Innisfree” can never be fully shared with one’s children, and seldom with one’s spouse.  It can only be shared with one who “lived” it.  If you don’t understand what I’m saying, then you aren’t old enough to have discovered your own “Isle of Innisfree”!

Last time we began an investigation into what is called a “Proposed Article V Constitutional Convention”, or a “CON-CON, also referred to as a “Convention of The States”.  We examined the procedure that  “Article V” of our 1787 Constitution specifies as to how our constitution is to be amended.  We also looked at some “unwise” amendments ratified in the first quarter of the 20th century, and began to question the rationality of convening a NEW CON-CON, as well as the possible motives of the people and/or groups who are pushing hard for it—people who are attempting a “con-job”, first and foremost.

Let’s begin this investigation into this possible Mega “CON JOB” by reading what our present U.S. Constitution says in Article Five (V)  about “amending” it:

“ARTICLE V:  The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislators of two-thirds of the several states, shall call a Convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislators of three-fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three-fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by Congress;…”

As we discovered in Parts 1 & 2 of this article, the Christian missionary named John Birch lived a short but incredibly dedicated and adventurous life.  Back in the 1930’s, hundreds of faithful Christians from many denominations devoted part or all of their lives to missionary work in the large and chaotic country of China.  John’s parents were part of that dedicated band, and as soon as he was trained and prepared, he also became one of them.

In Part 1 of this series I asked the question:  What impels a young man to embark on a life of missionary service to his LORD and Savior?  It became clear, during my research, that John Birch received his “calling” to be a missionary from his Savior, Jesus, and he received that calling at a young age.  He never turned back from serving his Savior, nor did he hesitate from going into harm’s way many times during that service.   John was characterized by Robert Welch as “a simple, but highly intelligent man, who worked hard to serve God, spread God’s Word, and fought for the freedom to do so.”  Many times during his wartime service, Birch longed for the day when he could farm his own land, marry and raise a family, and continue to serve God in his own way.

No, this article is not about the John Birch Society, that great educational and patriotic organization that has been exposing the enemies of constitutional government, and their despicable intrigues,  in the U.S. for over 60 years, resulting in merciless attacks against it and unmitigated mendacities told about it, because THE ENEMIES OF OUR CONSTITUTIONAL LIBERTIES FEAR THE TRUTH—THEY FEAR THE EXPOSURE OF THEIR ANTI-AMERICAN, ANTI-CONSTITUTION MACHINATIONS, AND THEY FEAR THE WRATH OF A TOTALLY INFORMED AMERICAN PEOPLE!  The real John Birch never knew the late  Robert Welch, the American businessman and patriot who founded the JBS in December of 1958.

I can’t discover who originated that truism I used in the title to this article, but he/she was thoroughly aware of the foibles and shortcomings of that troublesome species of American citizens called “liberals” (also known as “progressives”, “socialists”, “maleducated”, “non-thinkers”, “left wingers”, and “moonbats”).  A few months ago my long-time friends in another state sent me a little tidbit of “truisms” that they had gleaned from the internet.  The article seems to have originated on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., and was titled: “Is Logic the Same Thing As Common Sense?”  Let’s look at each of these gems of logical common sense and reflect on the degree to which these “observations” have made inroads into our society, and whether or not they make “common sense”. You may or may not agree with my opinions, but that’s OK as long as you think about my words.  (I apologize for the length of this article, the longest I’ve ever written, but sometimes a writer just can’t “shut up” because so much needs to be said!)

Sometimes the right path is not always the easiest” - Princess Matoaka, a.k.a. “Pocahontus” (c. 1596-1617), a.k.a. Rebecca (Mrs. John) Rolfe--daughter of the Great Chief Powhattan, of Virginia.

Back in the days when I could move my legs and arms without joint pain, and before the force of gravity became much “stronger”, I used to do a lot of hiking in the North and South Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains with my kids and their friends, or with our adult friends.  Finding the correct path in the high country, surrounded by rocks and trees, and often cloud cover, was very important.  We all loved “the high country” and we spent many wonderful weekends or parts of vacation weeks exploring well known, and not so well known, great views and landmarks in “our” mountains.  In every case, having trail maps and using good observation and common sense made our hikes both enjoyable and safe.  Following the right path made ALL the difference.

I’ve always admired the late, great actor and patriot, Charlton Heston, who was a staunch friend of our Second Amendment firearm liberties for most of his life, and as President of the National Rifle Association for 5 years, he stood firm and strong in his support of our Constitutional liberties.  He was also a staunch supporter of the liberties of all Americans, having marched with Dr. Martin King in the “civil rights” struggles of the 1960’s.

A long time ago, before there even was a United States of America, we had a lot of angry folks living in what were then British Colonies.  One of them came up with a “catchy” slogan, and a lot of the other angry people thought that it made a lot of sense.  Eventually they got so perturbed that they revolted against the King and his political cronies, and established their own new country—the U.S.A.  You recall James Otis’  “slogan” that set them off, I’m sure:  “TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION IS TYRANNY”!  Indeed it was.
