Shattering the Myths That Have Distorted History
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
Dealing with the important matters of war and peace, I recall from my youth hearing wise men and women say: “Give the American people the facts and they will invariably make the right decisions.”
Entering and during World War II we were not always given facts. Facts tend to support the conclusion that the U. S. Government invited the attack on Pearl Harbor. Was the sacrifice at Pearl Harbor necessary to snap Americans out of their complacency and isolationism and help stop the Nazi takeover of Europe? A rational argument can be made that the attack was invited and the desired result was achieved. Facts are facts and conclusions are mostly opinion.

The Dove Brothers
- By Keith Crowe
This year at the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion a group which made their debut some 12 years ago will return with the original members for a special concert. It is none-other than the original Dove Brothers Quartet from Greenville, North Carolina. The following is from an article I wrote about the Dove Brothers several years ago when this group was together as you will see them at the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion August 11th through 13th. Now for a look at, in my opinion, a group which has successfully brought back The Statesmen and Blackwood Brothers style of singing which was so popular years ago.
Teaching Integrity
- By Ray Sheen
Integrity is a difficult concept for many people to understand. Some people claim it, even though they can’t define it. You can’t go down to the corner store and get it, but you can lose it at the corner store. You can’t get a degree in integrity, but you can lose integrity getting a degree. It is more than what you say. It is more than what you do. However, it is directly connected to what you say and do. Proverbs 10:9 tells us, “The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.”
When I attended the US Air Force Academy we had an honor code, “We will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate among us those who do.” This may not be a textbook definition of integrity, but it is a pretty good working definition. It embodies the two key principles of integrity. What you say and what you do are consistent and they are honorable.
Netanyahu for President?
- By Dr. Al Snyder
We can't get over the exciting impression that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made on the United States Congress during his recent speech to a joint session of the House and Senate. The American legislators gave him 29 standing ovations and interrupted him with applause some 50 times. Commentators said that he got more applause than did U.S. President Barack Obama during his State of the Union speech earlier this year.
Nationally respected talk show host, Rush Limbaugh, went a step further. He said that Netanyahu ought to run for president of the United States. "I would vote for him," Limbaugh stressed.
As We View Things
- By Don Lowry
I have written recently a couple of articles on the subject of worldviews. An understanding of worldviews certainly reveals that there is a clear connection between what one believes about reality and the way one lives.
When something provokes a change in what one believes, there follows in tow a change in lifestyle.
Recently, I have been preparing some messages for my congregation with regard to the biblical doctrine of sin and the introduction of depravity upon humanity. During my preparatory studies I could not help but notice how one's view of reality orders their understanding of life and how it is lived.
Let's Preserve the Historic Flour Mill on Hwy. 101 Near Cool Creek Rd.
- By Barbara Wilson - Greenville, SC
Dear Citizens and Entrepreneurs of Greer:
Many of us in Greenville County have driven by and admired that old majestic flour mill on Hwy 101, near the Cool Creek Road intersection. I wonder who used to own it, and what was its name? When was it built? Was it functioning during the Civil War era, and maybe feeding troops? Citizens, this is a rare historical landmark, and should surely be preserved! It is rare to see an original iron water wheel still attached to the flour mill! That high water wheel is the biggest I've ever seen!
Obama’s Destruction of the Republic: Incompetence, Intentional?
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
A public debate that must take place in this country in order to objectively assess the Obama Administration over the past three years comes down to this: Are the consistent failures of the administration intentional or due to incompetence? To this observer the answer is clear.
President Obama knows little about how the private enterprise system works in a republic. He knows nothing about national defense and military strategy. He has demonstrated that he cares little about our Constitution or the rights of states and private citizens under the Constitution.

School Board Retains Option to Raise Taxes
Greenville County Schools Superintendent Phinnize Fisher withdrew her proposed millage hike prior to the public hearing Thursday, June 2.
Only one citizen spoke in favor of the tax increase at the public hearing. Valerie Hollinger, a former board member, urged the board to vote for the tax increase “for the children.” No citizens appeared to oppose increases in taxes.
Upstate Republicans Buck Party, Help Kill School Choice Bill
- By Nathan Earle
At a time when other states are looking for ways to expand existing school choice programs, members of the South Carolina House voted last week to ensure that state-run schools will continue to operate free from the threat of meaningful competition. On the motion of Spartanburg Republican Doug Brannon, the House voted to table the Educational Opportunity Act (H. 3407) by a paper-thin margin of 60 votes to 59. The vote effectively killed the proposal and guaranteed that children in this state will remain shackled to the government school system for the foreseeable future.
Zais Calls for Flexibility in Education
- By Thomas C. Hanson
“I believe that no child should be forced to attend a failing school,” Dr. Mick Zais, South Carolina Superintendent of Education, told the Greenville County Republican Women Thursday. “Low income families deserve the same rights that high income families have always had, which is to choose the best school, which is the right fit for their child.”
Zais, who took office in January as the first Republican superintendent of education in 12 years, focuses on outcome and student learning, not input spending, curricula and programs.
Citizens Honoring Veterans
Greenville County military veterans owe a great deal of thanks to Dee Benedict and the Greenville Scottish Games for their “Tribute to Our Military Heroes” on Memorial Day Weekend 2011. Also entitled to thanks are Chip Howard and the staff at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park who have held Memorial Day Programs honoring all military veterans and presented American flags to the families of deceased veterans for a decade or more.
Dee Benedict, President of the Greenville Scottish Games, explained how the leadership of the Games transitioned from hosting a British Prince to hosting members of the Armed Forces.

GOP Leadership Should Ensure Integrity of Republican Primaries
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
Last Wednesday, May 18, 2011, Governor Nikki Haley signed into law H. 3003, The Voter ID Bill. It was a great accomplishment, because those who hope to win elections through various means of voter fraud fought the bill desperately.
At the signing ceremony, Gov. Haley said: “It’s another great day for South Carolina. The reason it is a great day is because we continue to improve South Carolina in terms of integrity, accountability and transparency. This new law is very important, not just for South Carolina, but because I have heard from people across the country about how impressed they are that we took it upon ourselves to secure the integrity of our election process.

Obama is Proving “The South Was Right”
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
To some in our country the term “states rights” are dirty words. To others, it is a constitutional principle underpinning and protecting our freedom.
Southern statesmen and political leaders from John C. Calhoun to Nikki Haley have been advocates for states rights. One of the major factors behind the so-called “Civil War” involved states rights. Although the North won the war through a policy of “total destruction” waged against both military units and the civilian population, the controversy over states rights continues to fester and intensify.
President Lincoln slammed the door on states rights and opened the door to a strong central government through the shedding of blood.
Greg Shorey Presented The Roger Milliken Lifetime Achievement Award
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
Shorey’s Contributions to Recent History of SCGOP “Legendary”
Gregory D. “Greg” Shorey of Greenville was presented The Roger Milliken Lifetime Achievement Award by the South Carolina Republican Party during the 44th Annual Silver Elephant Banquet in Columbia, May 6th, 2011.
Shorey is only the second individual to receive the prestigious award and the first to receive the honor since the death of Mr. Milliken.
Five of the State GOP Chairmen who followed Shorey stood with him when he received the award from Chairman Karen Floyd. One of the chairmen who knew both Shorey and Milliken well, said it was Milliken’s desire that his longtime friend and worker in the political trenches, Greg Shorey, receive the honor this year.
Confederate Memorial Day after 150 Years
- By Dr. Terry Lee Rude
The following message was presented to about 200 attendees of the Confederate Memorial Day Service at Springwood Cemetery in Greenville, South Carolina, Sunday, May 1, 2011.
The Greenville camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) and the chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held Confederate Memorial day on Sunday, May 1. The official date is May 10 in commemoration of May 10, 1863, the day Stonewall Jackson died, but we pick a convenient Sunday near the 10th. Just a few days prior to that Sunday some SCV members were alarmed by things they read in The Greenville News.
One concern was a County Council person who stated that we just ought to forget about the “Civil War.” Another was Jesse Jackson’s claim when he spoke to Southside High School April 11, one day before the sesquicentennial celebration of the firing on Fort Sumter, that a third of Southerners owned slaves. Where did he get such a large figure?
Was McCain Ineligible to Run for the Presidency?
- By John Murphy
Why Haven’t Republicans Challenged Obama?
First, let me state up front that this is a theory of mine. I'm not a Constitutional scholar and I have no inside information that someone told me.
I'm asked all the time by Obama supporters, "Isn't there one thing that Obama has done good in your view?" After thinking long and hard, I have to admit that there is one thing that Obama has done that is good. It's providing a reason for citizens to read or reread the Constitution of the United States and try to understand its meaning.
Battle for Property Rights in Our Back Yard

For Fish or Man: Plot to Kayak through Private Property?
A very important battle with far-reaching consequences is taking place in northern Greenville County. The battle involves the most basic constitutional right – the right to own and secure property.
Public-private partnership can be beneficial in cutting through bureaucratic “red tape,” but offers opportunities to subvert the will of the people and benefit some while harming others.
South Carolina’s Secession Hill
- By Jennifer Sawyer
Regaining its Rightful Place in History
In Abbeville, South Carolina, lies a 1.9 acre tract of land known today as Secession Hill. It is named for the event of November 22, 1860, which took place there. This event forever changed the course of history for the union of states known as the United States and particularly the Southern States of America.
Let’s Ruin a River for the Agenda
- By David Knapp
A person’s property is a projection of life itself; its an extension of the person’s life, energy, and ingenuity. The families owning property along the South Saluda River take care of the land. Now they are being pushed around, ignored, and their concerns over a reckless project discounted. A public-private partnership with big plans and a time table has little concern for longtime residents along the river.
Ethanol Fueling Higher Food Prices
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
Is it possible that the U. S. Government policy on ethanol production from corn could be causing food riots around the world?
The American Thinker says “yes.”
“Today there is a global food shortage and sky-rocketing prices. This has become the underlying factor in the riots in Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt, where up to 56 percent of a person’s income is dedicated to the acquisition of food. These riots are now leading to the upheaval of governments and the very real possibility of the ascendancy of the radical elements into control.”
Boat Owners Urged to Beware of E15 Fuel

EPA Approved 15 Percent Ethanol for Some Late Model Cars, Trucks, not Marine Engines
The Boat Owners Association of America (BoatUS) has warned members and other boat owners that the little label at the gas pump “could be all that separates boaters from dangerously misfueling their boat.”
With the EPAs recent decision to allow the sale of 15 percent ethanol for use in late model cars and trucks 2001 models and later, BoatUS says that trailerboaters will need to remain extra vigilant when filling up their truck and trailered boat at the local gas station.
The Wisdom of Ronald Wilson Reagan
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
A Tribute to President Reagan on the 100th Anniversary of his birth.
Many people in the media refer to President Reagan as the “Great Communicator.” He rejected that characterisation, by saying it was the message and not the messenger that was more important.
Ronald Reagan clearly had the training and experience of an actor that aided him in communicating effectively, but his quotes on important issues reveal his wisdom and deep commitment to his country. A selection of quotes that illustrate the wisdom and patriotism of Ronald Wilson Reagan follow:

S.C. Sound Money Conference Held in Columbia
- By Jeff West
The S.C. Sound Money Committee held an Economic Conference on Gold and Silver in Columbia on Monday, February 7, to educate the public and legislature on the dangers of our fiat Federal Reserve system, and the urgent need for a sound monetary system for S.C. as our financial system heads towards inevitable collapse from printing too much currency. Rep. Kenny Bingham, House majority leader, Rep. Rick Quinn, Sen. Lee Bright and Sen. David Thomas were the legislators who attended, as both Senators are spearheading the legislative effort in the Senate. Attendees were educated by a wonderful array of extremely knowledgeable speakers live from all over the world via the Internet.
Joint House-Senate Hearing Held on Sound Money Legislation
- By Jeff West
A joint hearing between the S.C. House and Senate was held on Tuesday, February 8, to consider sound money legislation, the day after the S.C. Sound Money Committee held a conference on the subject. The Committee set up a presentation for the legislators similar to that shown at their conference, allowing Dr. Larry Parks and Dr. Edwin Vieira to talk to the legislators remotely via the Internet. These experts related the same evidence as the previous evening, that the Federal Reserve and the U.S. dollar are headed for a collapse, and outlined legislative steps that S.C. can take to protect the financial interests of our citizens by promoting alternate currencies.

The Monday before last (February 7), the South Carolina Sound Money Economic Summit convened in Columbia. There were two separate events. The first was Monday evening for dinner and several speakers. The second (which due to a schedule conflict I could not attend) was held Tuesday afternoon with the Senate Banking Committee on the State House Grounds.
