Once To Every Man And Nation Comes The Moment To Decide

Note: A version of this article, under a different title, was published in The Times Examiner on April 13, 2020. Our “national situation” is even more precarious now than it was then. Those who deny that are either grossly uninformed, deliberately blind, or are in the camp of the collectivists.
I’d venture a guess that most readers of this beacon of truth called The Times Examinerknow at least some of the words to James Lowell’s (1819-1891) great 1844 poem—a 90-line masterpiece titled, “The Present Crisis”. It was first published in 1845 by The Boston Currier, written as a protest against the impending war with Mexico and as a condemnation of the then existing evil institution of slavery, which had been incorporated into the new Republic of Texas in 1836. In 1896, Garrett Horder (1841-1922), an English hymn writer, took Lowell’s epic poem and condensed it into the shorter but more familiar hymn—“Once To Every Man and Nation”-- that most Christians have always known. Both versions contain inspiring, beautiful, yet quite troubling ideas which have “pin pricked” my thoughts for decades. To a certain extent, Lowell’s words still stand as a “two edged sword” ready to condemn those of us alive today with their thrust into our complacency, as lines #26 through #30 eloquently proclaim:

County Councilmen Accusing Each Other of Grandstanding and Playing Politics
The iconic English nanny Mary Poppins would be proud of Greenville County. What became her famous nostalgic symbol may soon become Greenville’s colorful tax burden among other budgeted items. This past Tuesday, June 6th, the County Councilmen gave their approval for second reading of the proposed budgets for 2024 and 2025, which received some reductions at this meeting.
I will be the first to admit that when it comes down to the actual details of the budget, I am no expert, and I would not even dare try to get into those details and sway my readers one way or the other. And it sounds impressive that Greenville County has not raised taxes in 28 years, despite our property taxes saying otherwise. So, while everyone else is arguing the financial details, let us consider observable factors seen at this meeting that may provide some insight into what is going on behind the scenes.

The Greenville County Republican Party (GCRP) has received many questions and concerns from county and precinct leaders, who represent the voters of Greenville County. GCRP has met with several county council members and gathered substantial information on the proposed budget. We have prepared a letter for each precinct leader and officers of each “District” to send to their respective council member ( see sample letter HERE ).
GCRP’s stance on the proposed budget has remained the same throughout the past weeks since this tax increase was first revealed publicly. We believe there hasn’t been transparency or enough information given to the general public. Dozens of Democratic members of Congress sent a letter Thursday pressuring Walmart, Kroger, Costco, Safeway and Health Mart to carry the abortion pill mifepristone, stating their caution in not yet becoming federally certified to distribute the life-taking drug is “unacceptable.”
“Your pharmacies have been able to start the certification process since January but have not done so, despite letters from numerous governors and senators inquiring about your failure to do so,” wrote more than 50 Democratic members of the House of Representatives Thursday. “Your companies have a responsibility to consumers and communities to address this issue as soon as possible.”

Republicans Must Be the Party of Small Business

A recent Wall Street Journal lead story reported that "Republicans and big business broke up." The amount of corporate donations to Republicans was cut sharply in the last election cycle to a lower amount than in nearly a decade. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has backed many Democrats running for Congress in close and competitive races, which puts the GOP slim majority in jeopardy.
The writing is on the wall: Corporate America is increasingly aligning itself with liberal Democrats, not Republicans.
Christian College Cancels Promise Keepers Event Over Stance on Biblical Marriage

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont University, a private Christian college in Nashville, announced last week it had canceled an event to be hosted by Promise Keepers after the men's ministry released a statement reaffirming its support for the Biblical, biological, sexual identity of male and female, man and woman, in the context of marriage.
Belmont representatives cited a conflict in values.

Confederate POWs Marched Out Singing “Dixie”

Official records of POW deaths during the Civil War on both sides indicated that about 49,000 Union and Confederate soldiers died in 150 Prisoner of War camps. The major statistics are broken down in last week’s article, Union and Confederate POW camps in the Civil War.
Author Lonnie R Speer, however, in his 1997 book, Portals to Hell: Military Prisons of the Civil War; covering statistics from 96 Union and 117 Confederate facilities which housed POWs during the war, found 30,218 Confederate deaths and 25,796 Union deaths, bringing the total to just over 56,000. According to Speer, 15.5 percent of the Confederates prisoners died, a ratio 29 percent higher than the slightly more than 12 percent of Union prisoners that died. Speer’s statistics may even be conservative. Speer has only the 4,454 official deaths for Camp Douglas, but historical on-site estimates from Confederate prisoners in the last days of Camp Douglas and modern counts indicate there are at least 5,600 Confederate graves at or near Camp Douglas. In addition, about 400 bodies of Confederate soldiers were recorded as shipped to their families at home. George Levy in his 1999 book, To Die in Chicago; Confederate Prisoners at Camp Douglas 1862-1865, has a whole chapter, “Lost in Chicago,” on the missing Confederate dead.

The American public is increasingly rejecting the LGBTQ agenda, as a series of new polls show a growing majority of Americans agree that attempting to change your gender is “morally wrong,” that only two genders exist, and that women should not be forced to compete against men in sports.
A total of 55% of Americans believe “changing one’s gender” is immoral — up four points from 2021, according to a Gallup poll released Monday. Only registered Democrats became more likely over the last two years to consider transgender identity morally acceptable.

A recent interview by Mike Krupa of Ambassador Chas Freeman and Colonel Douglas MacGregor showed these two masters in their respective fields — diplomacy and military science — touching on and striving to answer a deep question that only true philosophy can answer in full: In the Ukraine War, why are America's current political leaders fundamentally averse and opposed to negotiating with Russia to end the murderous conflict?

'Pursuing His Twisted Agenda,' Biden Puts Progress Flags on Par with Old Glory

People visiting Washington, D.C. this weekend probably expected to see a white house on Pennsylvania Avenue. Instead, the president’s residence was plastered in rainbow and transgender colors, an over-the-top display of the current resident’s LGBT fixation. It was a stark contrast to the mood in the rest of America, where the fury over Pride displays has reached a deafening roar.
That all seems lost on Joe Biden, who hosted the largest Pride event in White House history on Saturday. The South Lawn event came just two days after the president savaged the Americans opposed to his wildly irresponsible agenda of transgenderism. In a scripted response to a PBS reporter, the president unloaded on parents who are up in arms about the indoctrination of their sons and daughters, calling the opposition to child mutilation “hysterical” and “cruel.”
